especially true in New York, where the Jewish Federation has estab-
lished a special commission on synagogue relations under the direction
of Rabbi Isaac N. Trainin . . . Rabbis and Jewish social workers in
New York . . . where there are about 1,000 synagogues and a multi-
plicity of Jewish welfare agencies . . . are now involved in dialogues
and confrontations covering a large range of topics . . . and this takes
place also in many other communities . . . In New York, the Federation
is conducting tours for rabbis at its agencies . . . Some of the agencies
are conducting workshops for rabbis, in which rabbis and social work-
ers review cases which would delineate the areas of cooperation be-
tween the two . . . Distinguished rabbis and social workers attended
a Conference on Intermarriage sponsored by the New York Federation,
and discussed the grave threat of intermarriage to Jewish survival
. . . As a result of this conference, Jewish family agencies have ap-
pointed a liaison person to the rabbinate who is now available to discuss
with any rabbi any counseling problem involving intermarriage.
THE JEWISH IMAGE: As the relationship between the rabbi and
the Jewish social worker improves, a more concrete picture emerges
of the image of the American Jew . . . And it becomes obvious that
the Jewish community in this country is not a monolithic community
... At one of the gatherings sponsored by the New York Federation's
commission on synagogue relations, Rabbi Trainin brought out four
distinct kinds of Jews with whom Jewish community workers must
deal . . . First, there is the assimilationist Jew . . . Jewish by birth,
he is not concerned about survival and the threat of assimilation .. .
Yet, from this rank come some of the most generous contributors to
Jewish communal causes and the community's most ardent workers
. Second, is the secular survivalist . . . He represents a significant
number of Jews who are totally unconcerned with Judaism as a reli-
gion, but who are passionately determined to see that the Jewish
people survive . . .Third, is the synagogue-affiliated Jew, who belongs
because of a sense of conformity, but who would be hard put to define
what Judaism means to him . . . Fourth, is the synagogue-affiliated
survivalist, who is committed to the Jewish religion and to Jewish
peoplehood .. . And he is concerned about transmitting those values
to his children.
ON THE SCENE: After the success of "Fiddler on the Roof" and
"The Zulu and the Zayda" a third theatrical production on a Jewish
theme is now beginning to attract attention in New York . • . It is "The
Pocket Watch," a play by Alvin Aronson, presented in Actors Playhouse
. . . Performed by excellent actors, the play portrays the family life
of an American Jewish family of three generations . . . There is the
older generation of an immigrant grandfather who still works hard
but has managed to accumulate some savings . . . There is his wife,
the very good-natured typical Jewish grandmother who has nothing but
kindness and love for everybody . . . There is the American-born mar-
ried daughter who insists on living like the Joneses despite the fact
that her husband cannot afford it . . . And there is the second Ameri-
can-born daughter, an old maid school teacher who finally finds happi-
ness in marrying an old acquaintance • . . And, of course, there is the
second-generation American-born boy who has his own ambitions, and
good ambitions too .. . It is a sentimental three-act play with many
touches of humor which keeps the audience — Jewish and non-Jew-
ish — interested from the first scene to the very last . . . The acting
is perfect and reminds one of the fine acting of Maurice Schwartz's
Yiddish Art Theater which ceased its existence with the decline of the
Yiddish language . . . In fact, "The Pocket Watch" is good Yiddish
theater in English.

life is similar to the tree that grows in
the field. Just as a tree has roots,
branches, fruits and leaves, so too does
a human being have roots, fruits —
which are deeds — leaves -- which are

LONDON (JTA) — Twelve
youths accused of attacking a
group of Yeshiva students in North
London recently were being held
for trials in Old Bailey, the city's
Central Criminal Court. Police had
arrested 14 youths, but two were
acquitted after a hearing for lack
of evidence linking them directly
with the occurrence.
All 12 were charged with mali-
cious mischief and attempt to
murder. The murder attempt was
directed, according to police testi-
mony, against one of the Yeshiva
students, Joseph Springer. He is
a son of one of the leading British
