Gen. Daycin, Has No Regrets About His
Role in Rafi; Boosts Rassco Sale Here

BY CHARLOTTE HYAMS
General Moshe Dayan wasn't
here to talk about politics. And he
kept to his intention Wednesday,
saying only about his position with
David Ben-Gurion's splinter Rafi
Party:
"I'm very much so in Rafi. • I
don't regret it a minute, and I
would do it again."
But as for answering ques-
tions about his political future,
Ben-Gurion's future, Rafi's fu-
ture—Israel's former chief of
staff of the armed forces merely
smiled and replied: "Let's talk
about Rassco."
Rassco, the Rural and Suburban
Settlement Co., Ltd. is what
brought Dayan to Detroit.
At a dinner addressed by Dayan
at the Sheraton-Cadillac Hotel
Wednesday evening, some 200 local
businessmen, many of them Rassco
stockholders, were urged to invest
in Rassco's infant holding com-
pany, Arad.
Arad brings together companies
engaged in construction, quarrying
and production of materials in the
building of roads in Israel:
Dayan was a guest at a luncheon
for dinner sponsors and was
queried at a press conference that
afternoon in the Pontchartrain
Hotel. Hosts were members of the
Detroit Council of Rassco Asso-
ciates under Norman Allen, chair-
man, and Phillip Stollman, general
chairman for the dinner.
While insisting that Israel
faces no immediate danger from
her neighbors ("The army is in
better shape than ever, and
Egypt knows she is not strong
enough to take us on"), Dayan
admitted that the huge sale of
U. S. arms to Jordan and Saudi
Arabia was disturbing.
"It marks a major change in
U. S. policy toward the Middle
East," he said. "And it means
there's a new Arab army. They
never had anything that could be
called an army before—no armor
or tanks.
"There is no immediate danger,"
he added, "but we must think three
or four years ahead."
Dayan repeated there was "no
great -danger" when asked about
reports of growing inflation in
Israel. He conceded to the possi-
bility of "unpleasant measures" in
the future, but "building is meeting
the demand, and costs are being
stabilized."
Turning to the business at
hand, Dayan said the importance
of new roads in Israel includes
the opening of new development
areas in the Negev and Galilee,
easing of traffic congestion
threatening the larger cities and
lowering of the accident rate,
one of the highest in the world.
Arad points out that since 1948,
there are four times as many peo-
ple and 14 times as many motor
vehicles but only 2% times as
many miles of new roads.
Rassco is offering 375,000 shares
and 11,250,000 pounds ($3,750,000)
in debentures in the Arad com-
pany. Priced at $1,150 per unit,
over $4,500,000 in "packages" have
been sold since Nov. 1. (Each unit
consists of 50 ordinary shares and
1,500 pounds principal amount of
debentures).
On another business subject,
equally dear to his heart, Gen.
Dayan said his controversial
"Diary of the Sinai Campaign," in
which he—as he puts it— "de-
stroys the Knights of Sinai", is
"selling like hotcakes—over 35,000
copies in two months. A regular
best seller."
(Harper Brothers will be pub-
lishing it soon in the United
States.)

Dayan Spurs Rassco Stock
Sale at Stockholders' Fete
Addressing the dinner of Rassco
stockholders, Wednesday night, at
the Sheraton Cadillac Hotel, Gen.
Moshe Dayan strongly urged sup-
port of Rassco efforts in Israel as

one of the basic needs to encour-
age Israel's economic development.
Jacques Torczyner, president of
the Zionist Organization of Ameri-
ca, who is assistant general man-
ager of Rassco in this country,
reviewed Rassco's history and told
about the numerous aspects of the
company's work in Israel since it
was founded in 1935 to assist the
escape of German Jews from the
Nazi terror.
Norman Allen, chairman of
Rassco Associates in Detroit, un-
der whose_ leadership the Dayan
visit and meetings here were ar-
ranged, joined in appealing for
participation in Rassco activities
and enumerated the Rassco in-
dustries and their accomplish-
ments.
Torczyner especially dwelt on

Adullam Nursery Delivers
Five Million Saplings
ADULLAM—Since its opening
in 1959, the 40-dunam (10-acre)
Jewish National Fund tree nur-
sery at Giv'at Yeshayahu for the
Adullam Region in Israel pro-
duced 5,000,000 forest tree sap-
lings for the JNF afforestation
work in the area.

the importance of the new Rassco
project, the Arad road develop-
ment industry, and spoke about
the significance of proper road
building as a strategic Israel aim.
Gen. Dayan, who was intro-
duced by Gen. S. L. A. Marshall
as "the farmer of Nahalal . . . the
homespun character," reviewed the
military situation in Israel, re-
ferred to the failure of the Arabs
to fulfill their threats to divert
the Jordan River project, and com-
mended Nasser, Bourguiba and
Hussein for recognizing the futility
of endless threats to Israel.
Stating that he "prefers a shaky
peace" and emphasizing that "time
is working for us,". Gen. Dayan
pointed out that "in everyday life
in Israel since the Sinai Campaign
we are enjoying a peaceful life."
Phillip Stoliman, in one of the
evening addresses, strongly en-
dorsed the Rassco appeal and
stated that while investments are
urgent in efforts in Israel's behalf
all of the community's striving
should be to help assure the great-
est success ever for the approach-
ing Allied Jewish Campaign.
Other participants in the dinner
program were Dr. Jacob Goldman,
who presided; Rabbi Jack Gold-
man, manager of the Detroit Rass-
co office, Tom Borman and Dr.
Leon Fram.

New Seminary Building Projects

The new buildings — an academic building (background), a
library building (left, foregrpund) and residence halls (right, fore-
ground) as they will be added to the present campus of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America, in the Morningside Heights sec-
