ROME—Italian government offi-
cials and consuls here of various
countries pledged Wednesday con-
tinuance of their cooperation with
the United Hias Service in its pro-
gram of resettlement of Jewish
refugees.
The occasion was a reception
given to Murray J. Gurfein, Hias
president, and Mrs. Gurfein and
Mr. and Mrs. Gaynor Jacobson.
Jacobson is Hias director for
European operations in Geneva.
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Dr. Rolf
Gurfein toured Hias installations Pauls, West Germany's first am-

placards are not the right way to
greet a new ambassador."
In his first interview since his
arrival, in the Jerusalem Post, the
envoy also said that, to him, the
difference between "normaliza-
tion" and "formalization" of Ger-
man-Israeli relations was that "nor-
malization cannot be made, it has
to grow."
Describing his _feelings at the
presentation ceremony, he recalled
two sets of reactions. One was see-
ing "the marvelous soldiers" of the
Israeli honor guard. The other was

hearing "the uproar from behind

Myers show why, in the light
of recent archaeological discover-
ies, the Chronicles are becoming
recognized as extremely important.
The - basic materials, he main-
tains, were gathered together and
forged into a unified whole by a
single hand writing at a specific
time and for a specific purpose. The
Chronicler was a man with a con-
suming desire to justify and main-

He said he had known about the
Nazi concentration camps "and
every German knew," but that the
first time he learned about the
death camps was after he was cap-
tured by Americans and shown
pictures of the Bergen-Belsen mur-
der camp in a U. S. Army news-
paper. His response to those photo-
graps, he said, was: "I could not
believe it."
Dr. Pauls also told former
Premier David Ben-Gurion that
former Chancellor Konrad Ade-
nauer would make his long-plan-
ned visit to Israel at the end of
November or early next January
at the latest.
The former chancellor had de-
clared, after the Jerusalem dem-
onstration, that he was reconsider-
ing his plan to accept Ben-Gurion's
personal invitation to visit Israel.
Dr. Pauls reassured Ben - Gurion
about the Adenauer visit when he
called on the former premier at
the latter's home in Tel Aviv for
a 90-minute meeting. The talk was
held on Dr. Pauls' initiative.

his reasons for joining the army
was that it was "not at all in-
