NEW YORK — The American
Jewish Congress gave its legal and
financial support to a suit chal-
lenging the constitutionality of
Pennsylvania's recently enacted
school bus law, which authorizes
the transportation of pupils to "non-
public schools."
The suit seeks a preliminary in-
junction restraining suburban
Philadelphia's Rose Tree Union
School District from spending
funds to transport parochial and
other private school pupils to and
from their classrooms.
' The complaint was filed in the
Delaware County Court of Com-
mon Pleas by Mrs. G. Richard
Worrell of Upper Providence
Township. Costs of the suit are
being met by the American Jewish
Congress and the American Civil
Liberties Union.

MONTREAL (JTA) — Issues of
fund-raising and organization for
Israel were evaluated at a series
of meetings between officials of
the United Israel Appeal of Cana-
da and the Zionist Organization
of Canada with Dr. Israel Gold-
stein, world chairman of the United
Israel Appeal. The meetings were
held in Montreal and Toronto.
After the Montreal discussions,
Dr. Goldstein conferred with
Toronto UIA and ZOC local lead-
ers, and with officials of the
Toronto United Jewish Appeal and
the W o m e n's Division of the

Dr. Goldstein also addressed a

wasteland of Zion resigned them-
selves to waiting for deliverance,
though their hearts told them it
was in vain.
But there was one who refused
to sit by idly. Rabbi Akiba, now
aged and weary, taught the Torah
despite the Roman decree against
religious study; told the fearful
ones that, as a fish could not live
without water, so could the Jewish
people not exist without Torah.
One day there came to Rabbi
Akiba a mighty man, fierce-looking
and broad-shouldered. "I am Si-
meon bar Koziba," he said. "I
stand ready to strike the blow of
vengeance!"
Akiba said, "In the Bible it is
written: 'There shall step forth
a star out of Jacob and destroy
the enemies of Israel.' I name you
Bar Kochba—Son of the Star!"
Thousands of followers were
drawn to the new leader. They
even came from communities out-
side of Judea. Under Bar Kochba's
guidance, the people prepared se-
cretly, hiding their homemade
weapons in caves and ravines
against the day of revenge.
The moment came soon enough.
In Rome, Emperor Hadrian or-
dered his Judean governor to
erect a pagan temple in Jerusalem.
Bar Kochba moved swiftly. In two
years, his men captured ninety
forts and a thousand cities and
villages, including Jerusalem.
Frightened lest other enslaved
peoples follow Bar Kochba's ex-
ample, Hadrian sent his best gen-
eral, Julius Severus, into the fray.
Severus retook all the forts, and
Bar Kochba was forced to retreat
to the mountain stronghold of Be-
tar in the Judean hills near Jeru-
salem.
For one whole year the Romans
laid siege to the city. At last, on
the Ninth of Av in 135 CE, they
broke through the gates and pour-
ed into Betar. Bar Kochba fought
grimly to the end, and fell sword
in hand; Rabbi Akiba was put to
a cruel death by the Roman gov-
ernor.

humanly possible to keep alive the
flame of rebellion against tyranny.
But it was snuffed out. Half
a million Jews died in the year
135. The defeat of Judea was
complete, but the exploits of Bar
Kochba remained forever inscrib-
ed in the chronicles of Jewish his-
tory.
