Natanya Mayor Back From Russia; Says Jewish Values There 'Withering'

LONDON (JTA) —Mayor Oved
Ben-Ami of Natanya, who led an
Israeli delegation to a municipali-
ties conference in Leningrad, ex-
pressed the belief here, en route
back to Israel, that Jewish values
and the Jewish heritage of Soviet
Jewry "are withering and dying
before our very eyes."
He asserted that the 3,000,000
Russian Jews were "in danger of

losing their identity in the vast iso-
lation in which they find themsel-
ves. The image of God's children is
fading in a land where God's spirit
does not hover."

Ben-Ami r e p o r t e d that, in
many ways, there was less dis-
crimination against Jews and
less anti-Semitism in Russia than
in many Western countries. He
declared also that, as citizens,

British Labor Zionists
Vow Backing for Aliyah

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

LONDON — The British Labor
Zionist Movement pledged full
support at an aliyah meeting here
Sunday night to all efforts for
British Jewish settlement in Is-
rael.
Dr. S. Levenburg, chairman of
the movement, reported that
15,000 British Jews have settled
in Israel since establishment of
the Jewish state and that more
than 700 members of the Young
Poale Zion were among the set-
tlers.
S. Z. Shragai, head of the ali-
yah department of the Jewish
Agency, made an urgent appeal
to the delegates for maximum
settlement in Israel. In response,
the delegates adopted a resolu-
tion reiterating "whole-hearted"
support for aliyah as "the cen-
tral task of the Labor Zionist
movement" in Britain.
The resolution also pledged in-
creased support for the aliyah ef-
forts of the Young Poale Zion and
reaffirmed full backing the cha-
lutz (pioneering) movement in
Britain and for British agricul-
tural settlement in Israel.
The resolution called on all
Labor Zionists who are profession-
als to join Professional and Tech-
nical Workers for Aliyah (PATWA)
and urged the Poale Zion execu-
tive to explore the possibilities of
