BOGALUSA, La. — "Someday,
m a y b e I'll sell it, but the im-
portant thing now is to keep the
station on the air and let the Klan
know they can't close us down."
This statement came from
Ralph Blumberg, proprietor of a
once-thriving radio station, who is
fighting a losing battle with the
Ku Klux Klan.
Blumberg, owner of station
WBOX, used to have more than
70 sponsors paying him $4,000
a month. Now, six months after
he first started his campaign
against the Klan, he is down to
four sponsors, bringing him in a
total of $300 a month.
In March and April, a Klan-in-
spired boycott trimmed his spon-
sors to 10, and now they've been
further reduced to four. He keeps
going on about $2,500 a month in
contributions he has received from
some sympathizers in New Or-
leans and in the broadcasting in-
dustry around the country.
Three months ago, Blumberg
was forced to send his wife and
two children to live with relatives
in St. Louis because night riders
fired into his house. He lives alone
near the trailer which serves as
his broadcasting headquarters.

in freedom" the Austrians cele-
brated the 600th anniversary since
the founding of their first univer-
sity; 20 years since they were lib-
erated during world war II, and 10
years since the conclusion of the
peace treaty with America, Great
Britain, France and Russia.
An array of the world's greatest
Musicians participated, among
them George Szell and the Cleve-
land orchestra; Eugene Ormandy,
who received a standing ovation
after leading the Vienna Philhar-
monic orchestra; violinists
Leonid Kogan (after David Ois-
trach the most outstanding artist
of the USSR), Yehudi Menuhin,
Nathan Milstein and Ricardo Od-

Shafran; pianist Leon Fleisher,
who scored wherever he appeared;
opera singers Jan Peerce, Roberta
Peters, Astrid Varney, Adele Leigh
from London; the Bolsh•i Ballet
with the incomparable prima bal-
lerina Maja Plisezkaja and many
others.
A truly unforgettable experience
was the presentation of Arthur
Schnitzler's play "Profesor Bern-
hardi". He wrote it in 1912 and
called it "a comedy," not suspect-
ing the ensuing holocaust under
Hitler's regime. The play is ex-
traordinary, almost prophetic and
f ull of sentences and actions,
which alas are perfectly fitting in
the year of 1965.
The story depicts a Jewish direc-
tor of a Viennese hospital, a lead-
ing professor of medicine, who re-
fuses to allow a priest to adminis-
ter the last rites to a Catholic pa-
tient. The patient hopes for an im-
minent recovery and the profes-
sor realizes that at the sight of the
priest, she would give up the hope
and would die at- once. The conse-
quence of this only humane be-
havior is dramatic and grotesque.
The professor has to stand trial

played the title role. From 1912
until the founding of the Austrian
Republic the play was not allowed
to be performed! Now it is being
presented two and three times
weekly to sold - out houses, but
one wonders whether anybody has
learned from the saddest historic
lesson and has changed.
It was such a great experience
that impulsively I wrote a letter
to the director of the State Burg-
Academy theaters, Prof. Ernst
Haeussermann. He made this
unique performance possible and
I thanked him by expressing my
deep feelings and highest regards.
Another gentleman, Dr. Marcel
Prawy of the Volksoper, is de-
serving special praises for his
untiring efforts on behalf of Amer-
ican musicals.
The Viennese festivals lasted
for 28 days and their statistics are
impressive: there were more than
1,000 performances with an at-
tendance of a million people.
Now the • Viennese musicians,
music lovers and the entire press
are looking forward eagerly to
Leonard Bernstein's "debut" next
March. He will conduct gala per-
formances of Verdi's "Falstaff"
at the State Opera, in collabora-
tion with Italy's greatest stage
director Visconti. Regina Resnik
will sing the part of "Mrs.
Quickly."
