Philly Insurance Firms
Said to Bar Jews From -
Management Jobs

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — The
Philadelphia Chapter of the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee reports in
a study that barriers to the in-
volvement of Jews in management
level posts in major insurance
companies in Philadelphia still
remain.
The survey is based on exten-
sive interviews with high-ranking
officials ana examination of re- -
ports and other sources of six ma-
jor life insurance and fire and
casulty companies with headquar-
ters here by the staff of the
AJCommittee's Pennsylvania of-
fice.
The report said that one of the
187 officers of the six companies
was Jewish. It added that there
was only one Jewish board mem-
ber among the 109 of the compan-
ies. The study vas of managerial
and policy making personnel rath-
er than general agents who, usual-
ly, are not employes of the com-
panies.
It is one of a series of AJCom-
mittee reports and surveys of
the relationship of Jews to ma-
jor business and industry in the
Philadelphia area. In March of
this year, the Jewish group re-
leased an analysis of "patterns
of exclusion" among 16 indust-
rial corporations and 10 other
business organizations here.
The Jewish group points out
that "a conscious effort must be
undertaken by top management of
insurance companies to make the
companies seem more open and
desirous of obtaining minority
group personnel. The virtual ab-
sence of Jewish board members
sends out invisible signals to the
Jewish community even when the
company is anxious to have Jews
in its employ."

B-G Sees China
as Key to Peace

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

TEL AVIV — Former Premier
David Ben-Gurion proposed Mon-
day night that Israel should invite
a • Communist Chinese delegation
to come to Israel to see its
achievements and problems as a
move to ease Red China's hostility
toward Israel.
He said that the road to peace
in the Middle East lay through
Red China and asserted that Red
China's influence was contribut-
ing to the instability of the re-
gion.
He also disclosed that as Pre-
mier he had been "personally in-
volved" in four attempts at media-
tion of the Arab-Israel conflict
with President Nasser of Egypt.
He said two of the attempts were
initiated by Americans, one by
"an emissary" of President Eisen-
hower "and another by a very high
State Department official."
The third attempt, he said, was
made by a British journalist who
interviewed Nasser, and the fourth
through "a friend of Tito," presi-
dent of Yugoslavia, "who tried to
establish contact when Nasser
visited Belgrade. All attempts
failed."
