Maccabees Mark First Anniversary

NEW YORK—The "Bagel Lan-
cers," an affectionate label that
has fallen upon the Maccabees'
civilian anti-crime patrol in Brook-
lyn's Crown Heights section, cele-
brated its first anniversary May
15.
Also known in the area as "The
Talmudical Patrol Force." the
team no longer is made up only
of Hassidic Jews. All faiths are

represented, and there are some
20 Negro members.
Rabbi Samuel Schrage, foun-
der of the organization, said he
is proud of their accomplishments
in the past year: "People are
walking in the neighborhood after
dark again," he said. The patrol
does everything from helping di-
rect traffic at a fire, to helping
escort- a nurse from the area
hospital to the subway, to pro-
viding moral support for police-
men attempting to make an
arrest.
