As the warm-hearted spokes-
man for a great university who
welcomed visitors coming here, he
had become known for his skill
in handling a variety of subjects—
novels, poetry, medicine, the so-
cial services.
Now the eminent host is once
again the psychiatrist. Wayne
State University Press has just
published his impressive 606-
page "Illness or Allness—Con-
versations of a Psychiatrist,"
and this work is certain to gain
him many new friends. It is a
work so well compiled, done
with such devotion, that it will
be as welcome by laymen as it
will by specialized phychia-
trists.
In this work Dr. Dorsey is both
the student of the mind, the re-
searcher in human relations mat-
ters, the student of public affairs
—the man who knows and quotes
the Bible.
He has a fine sense of humor.
For example, heading the "Sum-
mary" of "Illness and Allness" is
this quotation from D'Alembert:
The author kills himself in
spinning out what
The reader kills himself in
cutting short.
The conversations which fill
this book deal with a gr-at deal
of matter — with communication,
"self-control t h r o u g h self-con-
sciousness," a large range of im-
agination, the absoluteness of in-
dividuali' 7, the subjectivity of
freedom, a realist's phantasies,
sex problems.
There is charm in much of the
conversational skill displayed by
Dr. Dorsey who concludes his
summary by stating:
"I am grateful to myself that
I can notice my protest against
soberly considering any of my
living merely indicates my de-
fending the current limit of my
soul-freeing conscious self-ap-
preciation. Where I come from,
all is I. Wherever I am, that I
am."
A chapter of more than passing
interest is entitled "American
Chaplain," quotes Isaiah, "A man
shall be as a hiding-place from the
wind and a covert from the tem-
pest" and speaks of the "idealist
Isaiah ((740-701 BCE)," who "de-
scribed the individuality meaning
of human being."
"Illness or Allness" is replete
with k n owl e dg e, information,
challenge to thinking. It's a com-
—P•S
mendable work.
