Many Biblical Women Portrayed
in Miss Crook's 'Women in Religion'
women who figured in Jewish his-
tory are represented in the array
of characters portrayed in Miss
Crook's account. It is an allumin-
ating work and it excellently pre-
sents the appeal for women's place
of equality with men in religion
and in world affairs.
"Women and Religion," by Mar-
garet Brackenbury Crook, pub-
lished by Beacon Press, is part
of woman's call for "a balanced
partnership between men and
women."
Subtitled "Women have a heri-
tage in religion to regain, develop
and carry forward," Miss Crook,
who has taught religion at Smith
College, points to the active role
of women in all religions. She
deplores their being relegated to
domesticity. Her appeal is:
Humphrey to Address
UJA Inaugural Parley
for 400 in Washington
"We are called to share in
molding the spiritual life of our
time and the destiny of our
kind."
Concerning herself with the
women in all religious movements,
Miss Crook has a chapter entitled
"After-Effects of Eve's Story,"
which deals with "The Priestess
in the Role of Midwife." and which
she describes how "Israel Dooms
the Witches." She quotes the bibli-
cal command "you shall not per-
mit a sorceress to live" (Ex. 22:18),
and makes this interesting obser-
vation:
"The program of penal ac-
tion was an ideal and memorized
as such. Witches and wizards
of the Old Testament were more
often burned or stoned to death
in imagination than in reality.
In Christian history it was other-
wise."
She deplores "the rigidity of
the Roman Catholic tradition re-;
garding abortion" but she adds
that "in the matter of family
planning Roman Catholic laymen
and laywomen are losing their ,
hesitation about speaking their
minds." These issues are supple-
mented by case histories that give
validity to the author's conten-
tions.
A complete chapter is devoted
to "The Prophetess in Early Is-
rael." It deals with Miriam and
the singing women, with the Bibli-
cal story about Moses' sister, with
Miriam in fact and in history and
her authority.
Then there is an account in this
chapter of Deborah who "counsels
the tribes of Israel."
Mentioning Miriam's death. as
recorded in Num. 20:1, Miss Crook
states that "her death notice is a
fragment from an ancient record,
a significant tribute tc her mem-
ory."

SANTIAGO (J T A )—President
Eduardo Frei inaugurated a two-
room school for 80 pupils con-
structed by 50 members of the
Maccabi club in a workers' suburb
in San Miguel.
The school is one of three being
built by the Jewish sports club
members as a contribution by the
Jewish community to the educa-
tional program of President Frei's .
new government.
The Maccabi members met a
self-imposed deadline to finish the
school in 15 days on land owned
by the government. The school in-
volved also a contribution by San-
tiago Jewry of about $2,000 for
materials. Construction work on
the three schools is being done en-
tirely by members of the club.
The Jewish builders, who are be-
tween 18 and 30, were cheered by
a visit and congratulations from
Juan Gomez Millas, secretary of in -
struction; Patricio Rojas, undersec-
retary of instruction; and Marco
Antonio Rocca, assistant to Presi-
dent Frei. Construction began on
Dec. 15.
The Maccabi members included
university students, doctors, archi-
tects, and teachers.
