HOLLYWOOD - Producer-di-
rector Mark Robson, on the eve
of his departure for Spain to pre-
pare for the screen "Ten Centur-
ians," was asked by the foreign
press how he explains that so
many World War II pictures are
being made though the struggle
came to an end nearly 20 ;
years ago. Somehow evasive, Rob-
son replied . that war stories are
being selected by the studios be-1
cause they are highly dramatic.'
dealing with the essential issue of
life and death. an issue everyone
has to face sooner or later.
Yet. the kind of war films Mark
Robson has been making, and his
most recently completed "Von
Ryan's Express" proves this point,
deal specifically with one aspect
of the struggle. to rid the world
of Fascism and Nazism.
Robson says that "Von Ryan's
Express" shows that during times
of war the human organism will
i become brave and often self-sac-
rificing. In his picture. Frank Sin- .
atra and Trevor Howard portray
the American and British leaders
of a mass escape from a German
prisoner-of-war camp in 1943
whereby 600 POW's capture a
train north of Rome and fight
their way across 400 miles of Na-
P;
(where the jewels arc!).

"Up From the Beach" bears sim-
ilarity to the classic Civil War
story by Stephen Crane. "The Red
Badge of Courage." Critics have
likened the novel on which the
new Zanuck epic is based, namely
Walt Disney's
George Barr's "Epitaph for an
Enemy," to a Second World War
version of Erich Maria Rem-
arque's "All Quiet on the Western
Front." Both parallels with these
distinguished literary forbears are
valid with one significant thread
running through all three. The in-
fantry soldier in question is be-
ing tested as a man, not as a com-
bat machine.
