Jews of England

n''?43t3

We heard about Jews in England as
early as the 7th Century. However,
we have particulars about their economi-
cal and cultural life only beginning
from the 11th Century. England
is one of the countries with a large
Jewish population—about 450.000.
The economic condition of these Jews
was always good and so was also their
spiritual life a rich one. The Jews of
England are organized in an organiza-
tion called the Board of Deputies of
British Jews. This organization speaks
in the name of all the Jews in England.
The Jews of England are traditional
and the majority of them are good
Zionists.
We know about quite a number of
important personalities that came front ,
this Jewry. like Disraeli the statesman. I
He made the purchase of the Suez
Canal for Britain. Sir Moses Montiefiore
is also a son of the English Jewry.
He became famous for his help to the
Zionist enterprise and it is he who
built a quarter in Jerusalem that is
named after him, "Yemin Moshe."
The Jews of England are accepted j
and honored in English society. These
Jews are known for their fine manners..
Immigrants from England found their
place in Eretz Israel and we meet them I
in various government offices and also
in many Kibutzirri and settlements.
The Jews of England both in the
country and the Diaspora are devoted
to their nation and the tradition of
Israel.

bad. For instance, a man whose
hands are unclean sees a holy book
fall into the fire. and says, "It is
better that it should be burned,"
and does not touch the book. An-
other instance has also been cited:
a man sees a woman drown in the
river, and says. "It is better that

touch any female during her
