Stories Depicting Symbolism of Hanukah Menorah

By DOV PERETZ ELKINS

Seven Arts Feature Syndicate

What is the symbolism of the
Hanukah menorah? Many answers
oan be given. The one I like the
best grows out of the story re-
counted in the Talmud of a debate
about the hanukiah (as the men-
orah is known in Israel) between
the School of Hillel and the School
of Sharnmai. The disciples of
Shammai suggested that on the
first night of Hanukah eight can-
dles be lighted and on each suc-
cessive night one less candle. But
the disciples of Hillel argued that
this would be backwards. They in-
sisted that on the first night. one

candle he lighted, and an addition-
al one on each succeeding evening.

We might venture to say that the
method suggested by the School of
Hillel was given preference by the
rabbis because of its inherent
symbolic meaning. That meaning
is that light should be increased
in the world, and not diminished.
Furthermore, that light is spread
in the world as one generation
follows another.
What is light? Light in Judaism
is nothing more or less than knowl-
edge. Light is Torah, and Torah is
light_From the Bible down to our
own times, light in the Jewish
religion has symbolized Torah —
knowledge, inspiration. righteous-
ness. The Hebrews were to be a
light unto the nations, spreading
God's devine word. In the Dead

Sea Scrolls, the righteous are
called "sons of light," and the
wicked are termed "sons of dark-
ness." In our synagogues today,
over the holy ark, is found the
Ner Tamid, the everlasting light
symbolizing God's eternal pres-
ence.
Thus, by increasing the light in
the Hanukah menorah each night
we are making an affirmative dec-
laration about the world in which
we live. We are saying to ourselves,
to our families with whom we light
candles, and to the peoples of the
world who witness our annual iffi
holiday. that light is increasing
in the world, that knowledge of the
Lord should and is reaching out to
illuminate more and more of the
dark corners of our civilization.
