Ben-Gurion 'Reopens LaTvon Affair;
Submits Charges to Government

"Interpreting the Old Testa-
ment" by Prof. Walker Harrelson
of Vanderbilt University, published
by Holt Rinehart and Winston (383 -
Madison, NY 17), is a superb evalu-
ation by a noted Christian scholar.
Much research has gone into
this study. Dr. Harrelson, who, with
Bernard A. Anderson, earlier had
edited "Israel's Prophetic Heri-
tage," touches upon every relevant
passage, discusses the Scriptural
texts from the point of view of his-
tory as well as theology, and re-
sorts to many sources, quoting dis-
tinguished scholars.
Dr. Martin Buber, Prof. Yeheskel
Kaufmann and noted Christian
theologians are among the author-
ities whose commentaries are util-
ized here.
This is a thorough study and

As an addendum to his study, in
a chapter entitled "Between the
Times," Dr. Harrelson points out
that "the life and faith of Israel do
not cease as the author of the Book
of Daniel lays down his pen. The
Maccabean brothers continue to
struggle for the independence of
Israel and achieve astonishing suc-
cess."
He accepts the findings credited
to the Dead Sea Scrolls and offers
a number of explanatory evalua-
tions of the Zealots, Essenes and
Pharisees and he concludes with a
Christological note:
"The church declared that in Je-
sus of Nazareth the hopes of the
Israelite community had been con-
summated. At the same time, the
church continued, with Israel, to
look forward to the day when God
would display his triumphant rule
over all the nations of earth and
bring to mankind as a whole the
fruit of His purposed deliverance."
ance."
There is a hopeful note in the
very last lines in this study:

"In the end, distinction be-
Jew and Christian will
vanish, along with all distinc-
tions drawn between men of
faith( men of non-biblical faith,

The decade-old controversy be-
tween the former prime minister
and Lavon was revived again when
Ben-Gurion presented a "White
Book" to Justice Minister Dov
Joseph at the latter's home in Jeru-
salem. Atty. Gen. Moshe Ben-Zeev
also was present.

In his "white book," Ben-Gur-
ion, who forced Lavon out of the
dominant Mapai Party in 1961,
cited his conclusion that Lavon
gave the order and said that the
document should be the basis for
the justice minister's consideration
of whether a government commit-
tee should be named to review the
entire Lavon Affair.

forced out his post as secretary-
general of the Histadrut—Isra-
el's Labor Federation—to return
to Mapai councils. Ben-Gurion
demurred strongly and a special
meeting of Mapai leaders de-
cided to leave the matter in
abeyance. There the issue rested
until Ben-Gurion reopened it
last week.
Mapai circles were uneasy over
Ben-Gurion's action. The move had
been expected but it took place
just one day before the Mapai
Party was to make a decision on
some form of alignment with the
Achdut Avodah Party.
Lavon had been cleared by sev-
eral investigations, including one
by a cabinet committee, or respon-
sibility for the mishap, details of
which have never been publicized.
However, Ben-Gurion continued to
