Announcement has been made
of the engagement of Barbara
Ilene Cartier, daughter of Mrs.
Julian Cartier of Covington Dr.
and the late Mr. Cartier, to Ste-
phen Joel August. son of Dr. and
Mrs. Alvin August of Stonewood
Ct.. Farmington.
The bride-elect is a senior in the
school of education at the Univer-
sity of Michigan. Mr. August at-
tends the University of Michigan
medical school. An August wed-
ding is planned.

Four Noted Lecturers in Beth El
Lecture Series Starting Nov. 16

Dr. Richard C. Hertz announces
that the Bargman Memorial
Scholar Series of Temple Beth El
will begin Monday evening, Nov.
16, and will continue on four suc-
cessive Mondays at 8:30 p.m., in
the Brown Chapel of the Temple.
The theme of this year's series is
"Jewish Identity—Today and To-
morrow."
The lecture on Nov. 16 will be by
Dr. Albert A. Gordon, Rabbi of
Temple Emanuel, Newton Center,
Mass., former executive director of
the United Synagogue of America
and author of "Intermarriage: In-
terfaith, In terethn ic and Inter-
racial."
On Nov. 23, the lecturer will be
Dr. Jacob R. Marcus, professor of
American Jewish history at He-
brew Union College—Jewish Insti-
tute of Religion and director of the
American Jewish Archives and of
the American Jewish Periodical
Center.

Branch Four Will Gather

Branch Four, Labor Organization
of America, will meet 9 p.m.

Gershenson Gets
New Appointment

From Governor

Charles H. Gershenson this week
received another high honor from
Governor George Romney by being
named a member of the Higher
Education Assistance Authority.
In his letter of appointment, the
Governor wrote to Gershenson:
'I have every confidence that you
will derive personal satisfaction in
this important position, and that
the State of Michigan will benefit
from your intelligence and vigor."
Gershenson's first appointment
by the governor was as a member
of the Wayne State .University
board of governors. Gershenson
presently is a candidate for the
WSU board of governors on the
Republican ticket.

The 57th annual Michigan Dis-
trict Conference of the Workmen's
Circle opens 8:30 today with ses-
sions scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday
and 11 a.m. Sunday at the Center.
The opening session will include
greetings from Monroe Title. dis-
trict chairman; Mendel Hofer. mem-
ber of the national board of di-
rectors; Lawrence W. Crohn, past
president of the .Jewish Community
Council; and Jack Carper, execu-
tive secretary of the Jewish Labor
Committee in Michigan. Nat Peskin,
of the Workmen's Circle National
Executive Committee. will deliver
the keynote address.
A musical interlude will he pre-
sented by Ruth Goldman. Detroit
Yiddish folk singer. with Rose slash
at the piano.
The Saturday session will com-
mence with a cocktail hour 8 p.m..
after which workshops and a semi-
nar will be organized to discuss
programing for branches, member-
ship problems and cultural activi-
ties. Participation in these work-
shops will be open to all members.
Sunday sessions will include re-
ports and discussions, with a lunch-
eon being served by the women's
division. * * '

Golden Ring Club will hold
its monthly luncheon 12:30 p.m.
Wednesday at the Workmen's Cir-
cle Center. Mrs. Nellie Entin, pro-
gram chairman, announces Mrs.
Celia Kliger will be guest speaker.

The other lecturers are:
Nov. 30, Dr. Oscar I. Janowsky,
professor of history at City College
of New York, author of "The Jew-
ish Welfare Board Survey."
Dec. 7, Dr. Abraham Kaplan,
professor of philosophy at the Uni-
versity of Michigan, author of "The
New World of Philosophy."
