Was in Furniture Industry

Sanley Brawer, co-owner of Star
Furniture Co. of Roseville, died
Sept. 25 at age 55.
Born in New York, Brawer,
25350 Greenfield, was active in the
Detroit Jewish community as a
member of Mr. and Mrs. Club.
City of Hope; Pisgah Lodge, Bnai
Brith; Mosaic Lodge, Shriners, and
Bnai David Synagogue.
For many years a member of
the Furniture Club of Detroit, he
received its Man of the Year
Award at a testimonial dinner in
1960.
Besides his wife Mary, to whom
he was married 37 years, he leaves
a son, Lawrence; two daughters,
Mrs. Alvin "(Joan) Shifman and
Mrs. William (Barbara) Markowitz;
one brother; one sister; and six
grandchildren.

eration of. Jewish Philanthorpies
of New York, the city's largest vol-
untary supported health, social wel-
fare and community services or-
ganization, inaugurated its 48th an-
nual campaign, with a goal of $22,-
500,000—$3,500,000 more then was

Montreal Seminary
Opens New Courses

MONTREAL (JTA)—A diploma
course for graduates of Jewish day
high schools was opened here for

the new academic year at the Un-
ited Jewish Teachers Seminary.
Plans have also been formulated
for a in-training program for

seminary courses in general and

Leoni, the former chief rabbi of
Venice, died at age 67, last Friday.
Rabbi Leoni was appointed Ven-
ice's chief rabbi in 1962, and served
congregations in Ferrara, Italy,
and, during the Nazi occupation
of the area. was forced to go into
hiding. While chief rabbi in Venice,
Rabbi Leoni was friendly with the ,
late Pope John XXIII. who was at
that time the Catholic patriarch of
Venice.

Brand, former leader of the Ach-
dut Avoda Party in the United
States, died here last Friday. He
was born in Poland and emigrated
to the U. S. to escape the Nazis.
He settled in Israel last year. Pres-
ident Zalman Shazar, who was as-

sociated with Mr. Brand in Zionist
activities in Poland,. sent a mes-
sage of condolences to Achdut
