LONDON ( JTA) — Britain's
major parties, bidding for votes in
the Oct. 15 general election, all
made statements on issues of spe-
cial concern to Jewish voters, par-
ticularly regarding the Middle
East
Sir Alec Douglas-Home, the ,
premier and leader of the Conserv-
ative party, has left this election
assignment to his home secretary,
Henry Brooke, who speaks in gen-
eral terms and avoids specific is-
sues. Brooke tells voters that the
guiding principle of the British
government is to maintain the bal-
ance of arms in the area.
Labor party leader Harold Wil-
son has been much more specific,
asserting that, if Labor wins, we
will try to obtain agreement of the
great powers to halt the arms race
in the Middle East. Jo Grimond,
Liberal Party leader and head of
the party least likely to win, has
told voters that he also favors a
halt in the arms race. But he has
added that, if the Arabs refuse to
make peace with Israel and con-
tinue their arms race, Israel is en-
titled to maintain the balance by
getting the new modern arms it
needs.

Thus, because the animals de-
scribed are in far-away places,

the author also has included among
the illustrations a set of maps.
The reader is taken to the Came-
roons, to Guiana, to the Gauchos,
to Paraguay, to many other places.
The hunts are exciting, and the
author tells his stories about the
animals he describes with great
skill.
Born in India in 1925, Gerald

him an outstanding work authority
on animals and animal life.
Viking Press children's depart-
ment renders another noteworthy
service with another splendid book,
"The Winter Flower and Other
Fairy Stories" by Anne Montrose,
illustrated by Mircea Vasiliu.
There is a combination of ro-
mance and poetry in this group of
stories. The author has acquired
genuine mastery of the narrative
skill and of imaginative power.
Each of her stories contains the
charm that makes fairy tales so
well liked by young readers. And
because she relates her stories
with marked wholesomeness they
emerge among the best of the mod-
ern tales for the young. They hold
the reader's attention and each
story encourages the reading of
the next. It is the narrative style
and the imaginativeness that makes
this a most noteworthy collection
Of warm and inspiring tales.
