Brasilia Now Has
Jewish Community

The development of an entirely
new Jewish community in Brazil's
ultra-modern capital city of Bra-
silia, far removed from the main
centers of Jewish life in that coun-
try, was reported to the World
Jewish Congress by Dr. Alfred
Hirschberg, first secretary of the
Confederation of Brazilian Jews,
during a recent visit to New York.
The new community is about
1,000 miles from Sao Paulo which,
with Rio de Janeiro. forms the hub
of Jewish life and activity in Bra-
zil. There are now already about
120 Jewish families in the capital
city, consisting mainly of govern-
ment employes and professionals.
Dr. Hirschberg confirmed reports
received earlier that Brazilian
Jewry had not been affected in any
way by the recent political changes.
Significant for the attitude of
the Brazilian people is the fact
that so far anti-Semitic Arab en-
deavors in other parts of Latin
America have not been pursued in
Brazil. Relations between Brazilian
citizens of Arab and Jewish origin
have not been affected.
