The Tragedy of
rugoslavian Jewry
BY J. I. FISHBEIN
(Copyright. 1.964. JTA. Inc.)
Although Yugoslavia is ruled by
a Communist party, it is almost
indistinguishable from the west-
ern world - insofar as its culture
and characteristics are concerned.
This spirit is reflected in the atti-
tude displayed toward its 6,500
Jews.
Of these only 1,000 remain in
Belgrade, the capital; 1,000 in Za-
greb, 1,000 in Sarajevo and the
rest are scattered throughout 36
comunities of this beautiful moun-
tainous country. Before the war
there were 80,000 Jews in Yugo-
slavia living in 117 communities,
they were close allies of - Tito.
Thirteen, we were proudly in-
formed, hold the highest awards
the country offers, regarded by all
as national heroes. On page 18 of
their official history entitled "The
Crimes of the Fascists Occupants
and their Collaborators Against
Jews in Yugoslavia," one finds the
following tribute: "But there is
also another fact in which we can
take pride. There was almost no
Yugoslave Jew who had collab-
orated with the fascist occupants
and their traitorous domestic col-
laborators, or disgraced himself
with the blood and sufferings of
his brethren."
Despite the limited numbers,
the community makes an intensive

David A. Levi is secretary of the
Federation of Jewish Communities
in Yugoslavia who occupies a fine
office, well staffed, in Belgrade.
A month ago, the distinguished
Jewish scholar, Dr. Albert Vajs,
who headed the Federation since
its inception, passed on and the
new president was away in Israel.
Levi confirmed what we had al-
ready learned from other sources
-namely, that the Jews of his
country enjoy every freedom avail-
able to other citizens. Anti-Semi-
tism is really non-existent. '
Many of the leaders of the part-
isans who had freed Yugoslavia
from the Nazis had been Jews, and

There is no problem. for , any-
one who wants to leave. The
Israeli Consulate confirmed
that this was true. Some 8,000
Yugoslavia Jews are now Is-
raeli citizens, having emigrated
since 1948.
There are several Jewish worn-
en's clubs, two choral societies, a
publishing house and numerous
social and cultural programs. Each
of the three main Jewish centers
has its own library. There is a
Jewish old peoples home in Zag-
reb consisting of 114 beds-sup-
ported by the government. In Bel-
grade, visitors will find an
excellent Jewish museum whose
archives preserve the history and
tragedy of this ancient Jewry.
Secretary Levi said "our real
problem is that there are so few
of us left." And he added, "we do
the best possible, but 'Mir Hobben
Keine Yidden.' "
The Nazis did their work well.
After 2,000 years of Jewish life
in the territory, all that will re-
main is a museum.
