With His Talks in England

A GOOD MAN TO KNOW !

LONDON (JTA)—Shimon Peres,
Israel's Deputy Defense Minister,
left for Paris to join Gen. Yitzhak
Rabin, Israel's Chief of Staff and
Air Force Commander Ezer Weiz-
mann, who have been conferring
for several days with French mil-
itary officials.
During a private visit of a few
days in London. Peres visited an
air show and paid a courtesy visit
• to Defense Minister Peter Thurny-
craft. Julian Amery, the British
aviation
minister,
tendered
a
luncheon in honor of the Israeli
defense official. The exchange of
views between the British officials

the R.S.N.C. News July issue voiced
the views and concerns of these peo-

An explanation of the Republi-
can action taken by the party's
nationalities division was made
this week to The Jewish News by
ilmar Heinaru. director of that di-
vision.
Referring to the charge that
Michigan Republicans have been
duped by Arab anti-Israelis into
fomenting strife and creating
hatred for a nation that is on the
friendliest terms with the United
States, Heinaru writes:
"I have little doubt about it that
the two resolutions that you re-
ferred to represented the Arab
point of view, and would we have
had Jewish representation, they
would have had every opportunity
and every right to express theirs
also to the resolutions committee."
The complete text of Heinaru's
letter to the editor follows:

the Resolutions Committee.
In conclusion, I like to assure you that
the Council had no intentions to "di-
vide rather than unite - nor to "incite
hatred." If it was done, it was unin-
tentional and please accept my sincere
regrets on behalf of the Council.
The Republican Party of Michigan is
not anti-Israel or anti-Jewish and neither
is the Republican State Nationality
Council.

Thank you very much for mailing me
the copy of your September 18th issue
of the Jewish News. It gave me an op-
portumt to study your commentary
about the Republican State Nationality *
Council and the diversion of the waters
of the Jordan River.
May I say to you that I found your *
commentary most interesting and very
enlightening
If I may. I wish to clarify some points
for your readers and hope that you will
find it possible to publish the following:
1. The Republican State Nationality *
Council was organized in March, 1963
for the following purposes:
a) To give the citizens among the
first and second generation Americans
representation in the Republican Party
of Michigan.
hi To promote and encourage citi-
zens participation of all nationality
groups in Republican Party activities
and to work for the advancement of
the Party's principles, policies and
candidates.
Membership in one of the clubs be- IA,
longing to the R.S.N. Council provides
a person an opportunity to be active
among his own friends, speaking his
native language. where desired, or
needed.
Through this program the Repub-
lican Party hopes to familiarize these
people with the American political
sys t em and attract them to participate
at the precinct and district level.
No nationality group is off limits '
and every nationality group is wel-
come to participate. The reasons that
we have not been able to organize
a Jewish-American Republican Club
are probably the same which were so
ably described in the first part of
your article. It is not because we
haven't asked or not made an effort
—we have. But the answers that we
received were exactly. the ones that
you listed in your article including
the one that the American Jew con-
siders himself as a religious group
and not a nationality group.
2. We often find it very difficult to
work with so many different nationality
groups, with conflicting viewpoints and
historical prejudices, such as exist be-
tween the Czechs and Slovaks. Greeks
and :Macedonians. Poles and Germans,
Ukrainians and Poles,. Christians and
Moslems, etc.. on certain questions.
That these differences do exist is a
fact and there is no useful purpose to
deny it.
The resolutions which were drafted
by the Resolutions Committee and pub-
lished by the Publicity Committee in

Labor Zionists Back LBJ,
Attack Goldwater Views

The Labor Zionist Organization
of America-Peale Zion has endorsed
the candidacy of President Johnson
and Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey for
president and vice president and
attacked positions taken by Sen.
Barry Goldwater and Rep. William
E. Miller in the election campaign.
Action was taken unanimously at
a meeting of the LZOA's central
committee in the organization's na-
tional office in New York.
The resolution stated that "John-
son and Humphrey represent the
best traditions and hopes of Amer-
ican democracy." It cited the new
civil rights law, the test ban treaty,
the Peace Corps, the anti-poverty
project and Medicare as "examples
of a program of broad vision and
practical accomplishment which
must be reaffirmed and continued
by the American people."
The group also stated that it is
"alarmed by the destructive posi-
tions taken by Goldwater and Miller
on minorities, immigration, labor
and social welfare and their reck-
less approach to the problem of
controlling and reducing the dan-
ger of nuclear war."
