Anti-Semitism in Soviet Union Hit Technion Leaders
by the American Newspaper Guild Pay Tributes: to
NEW YORK (JTA)—The Amer- potential" disloyalty to the USSR. Late Karl Segall

ican Newspaper Guild was on rec-
ord Monday with a resolution con-
demning Soviet oppression of Jew-
ish religion and culture. The reso-
lution assailed the "vicious, inhu-
man practices of the Soviet Union
which are threatening to put an
end to Judaism and Jewish culture
in Russia."
The two-million member New
York State AFL-CIO adopted a
similar resolution at its annual con-
vention, charging that authorities
in the Soviet Union "have been en-
gaged in suppressing Jewish cul-
ture and singling cut Jews as scape-
goats for failures in the Soviet
economy and in fostering anti-Se-
mitic sentiment."
The Guild resolution declared
that the plight of Soviet Jewry
was becoming "'ever more desper-
ate" and listed such acts as the ban
on baking matzoth, removal of
synagogue leaders and arrest and
trial of lay religious leaders "on
spurious charges of espionage "
The New _ York AFL-CIO noted
that the national AFL-CIO and the
International Confederation of Free
Trade Unions had denounced So-
viet restrictions against Jews. It
said the labor group wished to "add
its voice to those condemning the
Soviet Union's violations of the Hu-
man .rights of its Jewish minority"
and to !'call upon the Government
of the United States to use every
means available to it in the United
Nations and elsewhere to vigor-
ously protest official Soviet anti-
Semitism."

Israel Communists
Condemn Moldavian
Book Against Jews

JERUSALEM — Kol Haam, the
official organ - the Israel Corn-
munist Party, reversed itself Wed-
nesday and assailed a new book
published in Kishinev this summer
which accuses Jews of "actual or

The Communist organ last week
attacked Israeli newspapers for
calling the book "Contemporary
Judaism and Zionism." Published'
by the Moldavian Socialist Soviet
Republic, The book equates "Rab-
bis and Zionists" and charges that
the Jewish religion is "Alien to
the Soviet Spirit."
In its criticism, Kol Haam con-
tended that the Moldavian book
was published before the appear-
ance in the Ukraine last year of
"Judaism Without Embellishment"
which touched off a storm of pro-
test in the Western World because
of its anti-semitic content and Nazi-
like cartoons. The Ukraine book
was confiscated by Soviet authori-
ties after protests which included
sharp criticisms by communist
parties in Western countries. The
implication of the statement was
that such publiiaticns have been
barred in the Soviet Union since
confiscation of the Ukrainian book.
However, experts here pointed
out that the Ukrainian book ap-
peared in October 1963 while the
Moldavian voume was published
last February. The Moldavian book
includes references to the so-called
"Doctors Trials" in 1952 and re-
peats the charge of that period
that the American Joint Distribu-
tion Committee was an agent of
United States intelligence.

Munich Court Deliberates Lowering Charges on Nazi

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

MUNICH — The court hearing
charges against former SS Gen-
eral Karl Wolff decided Tuesday
to quash some of the charges re-
ducing the possible sentence
against him from life imprison-
ment to a maximum of 15 years at
hard labor.
The court accepted the applica-
tion of the prosecution holding
that Wolff had not taken part in
the shooting of Jews in occupied
Minsk and that he could therefore

be convicted only of complicity in
the murder of 300,000 Jews in oc-
cupied Poland. It was announced
that a verdict would be handed
down on Sept. 30.

Meanwhile, Czech authorities
sent to the West German govern-
ment the war diary of the SS
Security Division which reported-
ly contains very important mater-
ial on the wartime career of Wolff.
