Thoughts on th e New Year 5725

By WILLIAM R. BLUMENTHAL

My prayer for Rosh Hashanah:
May our children be inspired to
learn from their elders, and may
the elders be in-
spired in what
they teach their
children.
Let us remem-
ber for the New
Year not to have
time. for the busi-
ness of getting
old. Let us not
grow old by de-
serting o u r am-
bitions and ideals.
Whether 70 or
17, there is in the
Young of Heart
the Love of WOn-
der, the c h a 1-
le nge of daily
- events°, and the
W. R. Blumenthal Adventure of Liv-
ing. We truly live by seeking.
finding, c r e a tin g, cooperating.
sharing, loving, and being loved.
Life should be like a rubber ball:
id the bouncing
it must Bounce! Af
is, of course, always upward. -
Let us remember that Youth is
not a time of Life. Youth is the
quality of the imagination, the
freshness of the springs of life.
No one grows old by really Living.

One grows old by merely existing.
Do you want to stay young? Here's
the secret: "Don't quit." Asa rule
Quiters don't. Win. And ,Winners

Man does not live by bread

Rabbinate Clash
Averted in Israel
by Compromises

JERUSALEM (JTA )—Court ac-
tion involving the 'refusal by Is-
rael's Chief Rabbinate to supervise
.kosher slaughter at a new co-
operative abattoir in - the Negev
was dropped when lawyers for the
abattoir requested cancellation of
an order by the Supreme Court
for a hearing on the case which
had been scheduled for Sept. 1.
The case arose in connection
with the withdrawal of kashruth
certificates by the rabbinate from
those markets selling meat sup-
plied by the new, large Marbek
Abattoir in Kiryat Malachi, after
the latter employed as a super-
visor a rabbi not recogniz.ed by
the rabbinate. Marbek was unable
to secure a .supervisor recognized
by the rabbinate because the co-
. operative refused to comply with
certain conditions it said were
"unreasonable."
Last week; the Supreme Court
ruled that the Chief Rabbinate is
not exempt from replying to an
order from the high tribunal and,
in that respect, is no different
from any other public body in the
State. Tife court postponed a hear-
ing on the merits of the case until
Sept. 1, to give the Chief Rabbinate
an opportunity to appear in court
in response to. the show-cause
order granted the abattoir lawyers.
The granting of the show-cause
order by the Supreme- Court met
with sharp criticism on the part
of rabbinical authorities here, who

viewed it as an "intolerable" in-
terference by a secular court into

an issue based purely on "hala-
chah" (Jewish religious laws). The
settlement, which was reported to
be based on proposals by Ashke-
nazi Chief Rabbi Isser Yehuda .
Unterman, appears to have headed
off a collision between the Chief
Rabbinate and the lay authorities.
