THE GREAT DEBATE as to
which is new York's finer restau-
rant, Cafe de la Chambord or La
Pavillion, continues unresolved .. .
After trying both, there is little
light we can shed on the contro-
versy . . . La Pavillion was describ-
ed by a national magazine as "per-

haps the finest restaurant in th e
world" . . . On the other hand, th e
Chambord long has been recog
nized as having few rivals i n
Europe or the United States • s
a gourmet's paradise . . • La P t-
villon undoubtedly is one of th e
most luxurious restaurants in th e
world . . . The decor is rich, th e
service superb, and every tabl e
seems to have captain, waiter
and bus boy assigned to it . .
Our entree was filet de boeu. f -
Perrigordine, preceded by vichy
soisse and accompanied by a mar -
velour salad and a bottle of vii 1
ordinaire . . It was the fines I
thing we had ever eaten . . . Bu I
the triumph of La Pavillon war 3
short lived . . . Twenty-four hour 3
later we were at Chambord . .
Again we were besieged by wait -
ers, captains, bus boys—and thi i
time even the proprietor, Philli )
Rosen . . . The Chambord is older
than La Pavillon and not quite sc )
luxurious . . . But the atmos -
phere is less restrained and th ,
effect is somewhat warmer thar. L
at La Pavillon . . . We had sir -
loin steak with a bernaise sauce l
that was out of this world.

TO KEEP HANDS from smellin
"fishy" after handling raw fish
chill them thoroughly in cold water
before you touch the fish at all.
REMEMBER THE WONDERFU L
Russian Bear Restaurant in down
town Detroit? . . . Few who do can
forget the delicious delicacies pu
out at the eatery noted throughout t
the country as a top spot for this
wonderful food . . . Celebrities who
came to Detroit would invariably
ask to be taken to the Russian
Bear . . . Owners Mary and Tony
Pognanski are back in the eatery
limelight . . . This time with a
place called The Living End, 8225
John C. Lodge at Seward . . . Right
now Mary and Tony are just serv-
ing lunches, but later the menu
will be expanded . . . For enter-
tainment, Decca recording star
Mury Shiner, considered among the
really good folk singers, is appear-
ing until August 25 . . . after which
he leaves for the Canadian Na-
tional Exhibition in Toronto and
then Aug. 29 and 30 at the Phila-
delphia Folk Festival . . . Murv's
current recording hit is called
"Working It Out"' . . . with the
flip side titled "Cumberland Mine."
. . . Mury appears nightly at The
Living End, with blues singing also.
POT LIQUOR is an expression for
the liquid in which vegetables have
been broiled.
USUALLY A GOOD Chinese
restaurant is just ordinary, but De-
troit is lucky to have many far
above this category . . . For ex-
ample Eugene Foo's Kow Kow Inn
on West McNichols . . . and Oak
Park's Hoa Kow Inn on Nine Mile
Rd. . . . Both specialize in Can-
tonese dishes that are exception-
ally good and feature a wide va-
riety . . . we highly recommend
Kow Kow and Hoa Kow.

TRY THIS REFRESHING
DRINK . . To regular-strength

Iced Tea, add strained fresh
orange and lime juice, Sherry or
Sauterne and sweetening, to
taste . . . Pour over crushed ice.
