INDIANAPOLIS (JTA) — The
annual meeting of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation here gave an over-
whelming vote of confidence to the

civil rights and church-state activi-
ties of the Jewish Community Re-
lations Council of this city.
Some of the activities of the
JCRC were questioned at the an-
nual meeting, as were other issues
concerning the Jewish community.
To test the feelings of the 300 com-
munity leaders at the meeting, bal-
lots were taken on each of the
issues debated.
The meeting voted 123 to 49 in
favor of the Jewish Community
Relations Council continuing i is
work on equal rights for Negroes,
civil rights in general, and open
occupancy. On the issue of church-
state relationships and, in particu-
lar, on the council's concern with
the teaching of religion in public
schools, the JCRC was supported
by a vote of 142 to 28.
Federation officials, however,
pointed out that the voting repre-
sented only the opinions of those
attending the annual meeting, and
need not be construed as final re-
sults to determine Jewish commu-
nity policy.

FAVORITE STORIES ... by Sid
and Ann Cohen . . . about the time
they contacted a painter for an
estimate on painting their house
... The gent came over, looked the
place up and down and then gave
what he considered a very low
price . . . "What?" bellowed Sid.
"Why I wouldn't pay Rembrandt
that price!" . . The painter
shrugged his shoulders, looked at
his figures again and then said,
"Well, I tell you one thing. If that
guy is taking the job for less, he's
no member of the union !"

THAT CHILDREN should be
seen and not heard was exempli-
fied in Hammerstein's Drug Store,
Oak Park, last week . . . When
Jack Goldman asked a woman the
age of her clever son, she an-
swered, "Only four." . . . But the
little boy, looking quizically at
Jack, evidently felt that further
information should be rendered
"And mother," he said sol-
emnly, " is only thirty-one."

WHY IS IT, asks Ray Portney,
that women aren't embarrassed
when they buy men's pajamas, but
a guy purchasing a night gown
acts as though he was making a
deal with a dope peddler.
* * *
WHAT WOULD GRANDMA
have said if she had children
around 14 years old floating aly
the community at 1:30 in the morn-
ing . . . She wouldn't have said
anything because it would not have
happened . . . and if it did, no
words could take the place of a
sound piece of oak ... Restaurants
and soda establishments should
bar these kids after a certain hour!
. . . Not a night goes by but what
some youngsters are still on pa-
rade . . . Mothers who attend card
games, showers, meetings, etc.
should make certain of their ma-
ternal duties first!
