New Terms of Oxford Dictionary

The new terms in the fifth edition of "The Concise Oxford
Dictionary" and a comparison with the earlier edition that appeared
13 years ago, showing "The evolution of Semitic semantics," have
been described in an article by Geoffrey Wigoder in the Jerusalem
Post. Wigoder wrote:

The fifth edition of "The Con-

while the Pharisee is still "One of

and written law and pretensions to

righteous person, formalist, hypo-

has yet to appear.
A number of Yiddish terms have
now been naturalized, including
"shinaltz" and "shemozzle" (but
why is one spelled with "sh" and
the other with "sch"? And what
happened to the first "1" of the
more familiar "schlimazzel"—from
the Yiddish "schlim mazzel"—ter-
rible luck)? In the literary heri-
tage "Moses" as "Jewish money-
lender" (presumably from Sheri-
dan's "School for Scandal") has
been eliminated. "Shylock" re-
mains as "hard-hearted money-
lender" but without any Jewish
connotation, for which we have
now the further testimony of
George Ainlsly.
