Lubavitcher Message Brought Here
by 'Jewish Peace Corps' Emissaries
Emulating the great American
"Peace Corps" idea, students in
the Yeshiva of Menachem Mendel
Schneerson, the Lubavitcher
Rebbe. in Brooklyn, have em-
barked on a scheme which they
consider as the "Jewish Peace
Corps" and which takes them to
o mmunities
throughout t h e
world where they
spread, by word
of mouth and by
means of the
literature they
distribute, t h e
high ideals of
Jewish learning.
Two of them,
Abraham Blesof-
sky and Pinkhos
Feldman, came
to Detroit this
week to visit
with rabbis, to
tour synagogues
Lubavitcher
and to contact
Rebbe
groups and individuals in spread-
ing their message.
Nearly 100 of the close to 200
students in the Lubavitcher Yesh-
ivah have set out to visit the com-
munities of their choice to arouse
an awareness of Judaism.
This year. some of the students
have gone to Denmark, Mexico
and other Latin American coun-
tries.
Rabbis Blesofsky and Feldman
said that their intention is to visit
a number of Michigan cities, after
they have made their contacts
here.
Their efforts here are on be-
half of the Lubavitcher Central
Organization for Jewish Educa-
tion. They are guided here by
the local Lubavitcher leader,
Rabbi Berl Shemtov, who heads
the local Merkaz L'Inyonei Chi-
nuch.
Utilizing their brief one-month
vacation for their purpose, the two
emissaries who are currently here
also plan to go to Canada to con-
tinue their efforts. They empha-
size that their work is on a volun-
tary basis and they welcome co-
operation in awakening Jewish
feelings.
Rabbi Blesofsky said they have
met many Jews who have strong
religious loyalties but who need
guidance and that they are happy
to have the assistance that is
brought to them by the Luba-
vitcher emissaries.
There is great devotion to their
movement and the guests from
the movement in Detroit speak
enthusiastically about the more
than 15 yeshivoth of the Luba-
vitcher with a large student body.
"We are proud of our day
school movement, our camps—
including the one in Michigan—
and we are encouraged by the
response to our movement's ap-
peals," Rabbi Feldman said.
The emissaries for their move-
ment here speak glowingly about
Rabbi Schneerson, the Lubavitcher
Rebbe, who is acclaimed by them
for his learning, his Torah scholar-
ship, his knowledge of languages.
Cantorial Anthology
Abraham Baer, a 19th century
Swedish cantor, was a pioneer
in the field of research Jewish
religious music. In 1877 he pub-
lished Baal Tefilah, which be-
came the standard anthology of
Jewish religious hymns of the
Polish, German and Portuguese
rites.
