Danny Raskin's Germans Ileported Apathetic to Testimony at Nazi Trials

LISTENING

(From JTA Teletype Wires
to The Jewish News)

LONDON—The Germans are
reacting with apathy to the re-
peated descriptions of "the most
staggering brutalities" emerging
from testimony at current West
German trials of Nazi war crim-
inals, the Manchester Guardian
reported from Bonn.
The Guardian correspondent
reported that very-few Germans
he had questioned on one occa-
sion had read beyond the head-
lines of a 32-column-inch story
of testimony at the mass murder
trial in Frankfurt of 22 former
Auschwitz camp personnel. The
story described eye-witness tes-
timony of dogs tearing at the
bodies of women inmates in
Auschwitz.
At the 12,000-student Univer-
sity of Bonn, the subject of the
trials comes up frequently in
private conversations but it has
not been discussed recently in
public forums, he reported,
"and most students . do not read
details of newspaper reports on
the trials."
He added that he had found

that many Germans were taking
a legalistic view that such trials
were now "inadvisable" because
courts should not convict on
testimony taken 20 years or
more after the events.
Others, he reported, think
that the investigations have
taken such a long time because
former Nazi party members
have been covering up for one
another.

SAO PAULO — A former
Nazi SS officer, charged in
West Germany but never tried
there for murdering Jews dur-
ing World War II, was sentenced
by a court here to five years'
imprisonment, after being con-
victed of using a false name to
enter this country.
The man is Karl Freyman,
who came to Brazil several years
ago under the alias of Karl
Marie Jeske. West German au-
thorities had notified Brazil
that he is charged with murder
of Jews, but has, thus far, not
requested his extradition.

MUNICH — The trial of a
major Nazi war criminal, former
SS Lieut. Gen. Kark Wolff, an
adjutant to Gestapo Chief Hein-
rich Himmler, has been post-
poned to June 1 because of ill-
ness of the defendant, officials
announced here Wednesday.
Wolff, who was to have gone
on trial on April 21, is charged
with the murder of 300,000
Jews whom he ordered trans-
ported to the Treblinka murder
camp. He is also charged with
the murder of 100 Rtissian Jews
whose execution he ordered in
the presence of Himmler in
1942.
