Dr. Eichhorn Views Koheleth as
`Musings of the Old Professor'
i
I
In "Musings of the Old Pro-
fessor," Dr. David Max Eich-
horn has translated and offered
comments on the Book of
Ecclesiastes — Koheleth. This
volume, published by Jonathan
David (131 E. 23rd, N.Y. 10),
provides explanatory evalua-
tions of Koheleth, based on the
commentaries of noted scholars
and on Midrashic and Talmudic
sources as well as the writings
of the Tannaim and Amoraim.
Rabbi Eichhorn develops his
theme verse by verse, provid-
ing an entirely new translation.
He offers citical evaluations of
some of the commentaries. He
states in advance that he is
tt.rning "for a rational inter-
pretation of the musings of the
old professor" (Koheleth), "to
those among our classical sages
and scholars who were not
afraid to look at life as closely
as Koheleth had looked at it."
Important terms are defined
by Rabbi Eichhorn, with the
Tanna and the Amora playing,
important roles in the explana-
tory text.
Chapter - by . chapter re-
sumes, verse-by-verse anno-
tations, mark Rabbi Eich-
horn's study.
The style of Biblical poetry
is explained, and the author
frequently quoted legends and
parables to illustrate his points.
Rashi and other commenta-
tors are quoted and the words
of Ibn Ezra are frequently
drawn upon. So, also, are the
views of Joseph Albo and other
scholarly authorities, in addi-
tion to those from the Houses
of Hillel and Shammai.
In the course of his com-
mentaries, Rabbi Eichhorn also
describes certain common
usages. For instance, he refers
to the term for "cantor" and
he describes the development
of the "chazan" title for syna-
gogue - singer as follows:
"It first appears in the
Mishna where it has the follow-
ing usages: Children's religious
school superintendent, sheriff,
court crier, syngaogue sexton.
The modern m e a n i n g, one
whose primary responsibility is
to lead the congregation in
prayer and chant the important
parts of the service, does not
appear until quite late in the
post-Talmudic period. T h e r e
are clear indications, however,
that, even before the comple-
tion of the Mishna, the Chazan
was also used as a `shliach
tsibur,' a 'representative of the
congregation,' the term used
for one who is designated to
conduct public worship serv-
ices."
Where they fit, other explan-
ations are provided to make
this a very popular work for
lay readers. At the same time,
Rabbi Eichhorn's work will be
helpful to the rabbinic scholars.
Historical data also plays a
role in this work. The author
differs with some scholars on
translations of Hebrew terms,
and in all instances there is an
evaluative merit to his com-
mentary.
At one point Rabbi Eich-
horn states that "nowhere in
his book does Koeheleth at-
tempt to state what God is.
He only tells what God does."
The explanation that follows
is a meritorious discussion on
this aspect of Koheleth.
The list of Talmudic and
Midrashic sources, the section
on Tannaim and Amoraim men-
tioned in the commentary, the
references to post-Talmudic
authorities will prove of addi-
tional help to the reader and
student, to rabbis and laymen
alike.
