For weeks Williamsburg Jews
have talked about a "zelbs-shuts"
(self-protection). They planned
to hire "strong arms," possibly
from the ranks of the Jewish
War Veterans organization.
Police warned that if carried out
the plan could bring about chaos
and bloodshed. They asked resi-
dents to leave law enforcement
to the police.
Privately, several lea ding
rabbis conceded that "Jewish
Williamsburg" was do o m e d.
Already hundreds of families
moved out, others are looking
for apartments in the Crown
Heights and Boro Park sections
of Brooklyn. An eleventh hour
effort was made several years
ago when the city, in coopera-
tion with p r i v a t e investors,
undertook to build a gigantic
co-op project on Bedford Ave-
nue in the heart of Williams-
burg. It was hoped that the pro-
ject would attract upper middle
class tenants to offset the run
of low income families into the
area. The co-op was to be a
"strictly kosher" structure—the
first of its kind in America.

After spending millions of
dollars, construction was sud-
denly halted. Buildings depart-
ment inspectors found that in-
ferior materials and poor quality
concrete were used in the con-
struction. The half-built building
was condemned. Jolted by the
news, the c hie f engineer in
charge of construction hung
himself. Today the half-finished
structure which was to be "Jew-
ish Williamsburg's" salvation
stands as hopeless as the people
around it. Even when, if ever, it
is finally built, it will be too
late.
Right now most Jews plan to
"run away" from their once be-
loved Williamsburg. They say
that they will move after "Yom
Tov." To many, this will be the
last "Rosh Hashana" they spend
in company of their 'saintly'
rebbes in. Williamsburg.
Meanwhile, terror reigns in
Williamsburg. Children and
women stay indoors after dark,
men walk in pairs, some carry
pieces of galvanized pipe and
heavy sticks concealed in their
long black frocks. Says Schreig:
"Moving is expensive. We
