in Protestant Sunday school les-
sons? Do Protestants teach that
"the Jews" crucified Jesus? Do
they assign responsibility to
Roman authorities? Do they re-
late the meaning of this event
to the contemporary scene?
These questions on Christian
attitudes toward Jews are dis-
cussed in the article, "The Cruci-
fixion, the Jew, and the Chris-
tian," in the July-August issue
of "Religious Education."
Written by Dr. Bernhard E.
Olson, intergroup education con-
sultant at Union Theological
Seminary, the article is an
abridgement of a chapter from
his recently published b o o k,
"Faith and Prejudice" (Yale
University Press, March 1963),
which describes how outside re-
ligious, racial and ethnic groups
are portrayed in Protestant
church-school literature.
The Crucifixion may be under
stood in several contexts, writes
Dr. Olson. In assessing responsi-
bility for the event, Protestant
curriculum writers are dealing
with historical, psychological and
theological factors. Often, they
pass unannounced from one per-
spective to another, making it
difficult for students to draw
necessary distinctions between
specific responsibilities and gen-
eral guilt.
In "The Crucifixion, the Jews,
and the Christian," Dr. Olson
describes how four characteristic
Protestant groups teach about
the Crucifixion, and the ways in
which their various interpreta-
tions may affect contemporary
attitudes. The four representa-
tive groups chosen by Dr. Olson
are the Lutheran Church Mis-
souri Synod, Scripture Press,
United Presbyterian, and t h e
Unitarian-Universalist.
The use of such terminology
as "the Jews," "the Pharisees,"
"the Sadducees," "the people,"
and "the Romans," is analyzed
in substantial detail. The article
explores such themes as "the
biblical basis of the collective
Jewish image," and Roman fears
of potential messianic uprising
among First Century Jews, which
according to Dr. Olson, "is per-
haps the single most neglected
feature of the Crucifixion
accounts."

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Heed-
ing a protest by Rep. Seymour
Halpern, New York Republican,
District of Columbia police an-
nounced that the American Nazi
party and other bigots would not
be allowed to parade and demon-
strate here against Negroes and
Jews at the time of a massive
civil rights gathering on Aug. 28.
Halpern had questioned a pre-
vious police ruling to permit the
anti-Semitic mass rally. He said
in a telegram to police chief
Murray: "It is only asking for a
bloody explosion to permit a
violence-oriented agitation or-
ganization to take to the streets
when civil rights supporters are
here and emotions are brimming
over."

He stressed that "the criminal
records of the Nazis and their
fellow travellers indicate that
they represent a known public
nuisance."
A police statement said that
no parade permits will be issued
to any groups other than the
anti-discrimination organizations
directing the Aug. 28 march.
