Announces New Testament Courses Troth Announced

courses on the religions and
cultures that emanated from
the ancient Near East.
"The courses in the New Tes-
ta. ment studies will, as do the
other courses, be keyed to the
needs of the following types of
students:
1. Undergraduate and grad-
uate students who wish to en-
rich their academic experience
by studying the cultures and
religions of the Near East, but
do not necessarily wish to make
this branch of learning their
major interest.
2. Pre-theological students
who wish to get a good back-
ground in this area of studies
before they proceed to their
respective seminaries.
3. Graduate students who
would want to work for a high-
er degree in this area of stud-
ies; this would probably include
quite a number of ordained
ministers who might want to
take a higher degree with us.
"In addition to the regular
credit courses, the department
hopes to offer a number of non-
credit courses which will enable
the hundreds of ministers in
Detroit, who have not been ac-
ademically trained and have not
been ordained, to gain a basic
knowledge of the history and
contents of Christianity. This
training will make them more
effective in their respective pul-
pits and will make them heirs
to the culture and temper of
the twentieth century man of
religion."
Dr. Spiro announced that Dr.
Gordon J. Bahr will join the
WSU faculty in the fall to teach
the New Testament courses. Dr.
Bahr, who has specialized in
New Testament studies at sev-
eral universities, and who has
been a teacher in universities in
his chosen speciality, received
his Ph. D. at Hebrew Union
College where he .majored in
the field of Tannaitic literature,

The Department of Near.
Eastern Languages and Litera-
tures at Wayne State Univer-
sity will offer courses in the
New Testament, beginning in
the fall of 1963. Hitherto, the
department offered courses in
Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic
studies. In addition, it offered
a variety of courses in the Old
Testament, in Jewish history, in
Islamic studies, and in the his-
tory of the Arabs.
Announcing. the new courses,
Dr. Abram S'piro, chairman of
the Near Eastern Department,
stated:
"The department for a long
time felt very keenly the need
for New Testament studies as
part of its regular offerings, so
that its courses in the Bible
should not be restricted to the
Old Testament but comprise
both the Old and New Testa-
ments. Furthermore, inasmuch
as courses on the culture and
religion of ancient Israel and
of Islam are being offered, it
is only natural to introduce also
courses on -the origins of Chris-
tianity, thus enabling the de-
partment to offer a variety of

We Wish We may
We Wish We Thiglit
The old story, but it applies to us and we wish we
could tell you all personally how wonderful you have
been with cards, telephone calls and hospital visits.
It has been said, "It is more blessed to give than to
receive." But in this case one has to be on the
receiving end. And how marvelous to know that we
have so many thoughtful friends who were able
to give.
May the Lord bless you and keep you for all your
prayers and kindness, which have all helped to make
Stephanie's convalesence and anticipated recovery
more pleasant.
