BEN
TEITEL,

The temple's action received
backing from the United Syna-
gogue of America, with which
it is affiliated.
The club's letter to the
temple announcing its desegre-
gation asked for the temple's
"forgiveness for this unfortun-
ate occurrence."
Rabbi Schnitzer, discussing
the letter at the board meeting,
based his remarks on a biblical
text. The passage he chose
came from Leviticus XIX, 18:
"You shall not take ven-
geance or bear a grudge
against your kinsfolk. Love
your neighbor as yourself."

land, Steve Lawrence, Eydie

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1963,
_ Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)

It is required to add some
time to the twenty-four hour
period of the Sabbath both be-
fore the Sabbath begins and
after it ends.
This is one of the require-
ments the Rabbis deduce from
the language of the Biblical
commandment requiring us to
observe the Sabbath which
reads "Remember the Sabbath"
"Remembering" the Sabbath, in
this respect means, to have
the spirit of the Sabbath oper-
ate even on the week-days. This
is accomplished, in part, by
taking on the Sabbath restric-
tions and its holiness earlier
than at the exact period of sun-
set on Friday evening and let-
ting go of the Sabbath later
than the sunset on Saturday
night. The Rabbis also like to
compare this with the treat-
ment afforded to the desirable
guest. One feels the presence
of such a guest even before he
arrives and one feels the effects
of his presence after he leaves.
Actually, one tries to get the
guest to come earlier and stay
a little longer.

The Torah is read at the Sat-
urday afternoon services as
well as at the morning service.
- This was one of the practices
instituted by Ezra. The Tal-
mud (Baba Kamma 82a) ex-
plains that he did this for the
sake of those who could not
come to the synagogue on Mon-
day and Thursday mornings.
when the Torah is read. They,
at least heard the portion that
was to be read the following
Monday and Thursday on Sat-
urday afternoon. Furthermore,
some claim that reading the
Torah on Saturday afternoon
gives the Sabbath day an extra
atmosphere of sanctity which
raises it above the level of the
ordinary day of the week when
the Torah is not read at all or
it is only read in the morning.

Chapters of the "Ethics of
the Fathers" read in the syna-
gogue on Saturday afternoons
during the spring and summer
months.
Originally, and even today in
some localities, they are studied
on every Saturday afternoon
of the year. This was because
there was• a prohibition against
studying the legalistic - portions
of the Torah (Halachah) on late
Saturday afternoons because
Moses died then and "when a
teacher dies his classroom is
closed (out of respect)." The
ethics of the fathers are homi-
letical in character (Aggadic)
and thus not prohibited. Later,
they were restricted to or es-
pecially read between Passover
and Shavuoth so as to serve
as an ethical preparation to the
holiday which commemorates
the giving of the Torah. They
were also especially read during
the summer months because
laxity usually preVails during
the warm weather, and ethical
teachings are then in order.

Incompetent servants act first
and deliberate afterwards. —
