Mrs. Schaver Named Chairman of [ Katzman-Gayer
Engagement Told
Israel Bonds Women's Division

Mrs. Morris L. Schaver has
accepted the chairmanship of
the Detroit Israel Bond Wo-
men's Division, it was announc-
ed by Tom Borman, general
chairman, and Mesdames Joseph
Katchke and Max Stollman, out-
going Women's Division co-
chairman.
Mrs. Schaver is president of
the Central Overall Supply Co.,
founded by her late husband,
Morris L. Schaver, lifelong
Labor Zionist Pioneer, nation-

ally known philanthropist and
for 45 years an outstanding
leader in the Detroit Jewish
community. She has just re-
turned from Israel where she
completed plans for a major
project in memory of her hus-
band.
Mrs. Schaver was brought to
this country as a small child by
her parents. They lived first in
Rochester, then settled in De-
troit. Emma was very young
when her talents as a' singer
began to be recognized. She
joined an opera club and was
given a leading role in "Cava-
liera Rusticana", was a soloist
with the Halevi-Hazomir Choral
Society, .then studied at the
Julliard School of Music and at
the Chicago Conservatory, be-
came a professional concert
singer and sang ,in Town Hall
and Mecca Temple, New York.
In 1928, she sang before 20,000
people in a concert at Belle
Isle.
For two seasons she was with
the San Carlo Opera Company
and had the role of Margareta
in "Faust," and for one season
she sang with the Cincinnati
Opera Company.
In 1932 she and her husband
went to Palestine and Emma

Bonds Committee Sets Anniversary
Dinner for Israel, Redemption

The annual Israel anniver-
sary dinner will be held 7 p.m.
June 6 at the Sheraton-Cadillac
Hotel, it was announced by Tom
Borman, general chairman of
the Detroit Israel Bond Com-
mittee. The anniversary dinner
is the highlight of the 1963 De-
troit Israel Bond Spring cam-
paign.
Gen. Chaim Bar-Lev, chief of
the Armored Command of Is-
rael's Armed Forces will repre-
sent the State of Israel, and
Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin,
former governor of Maryland
and mayor-elect of Baltimore
will deliver the main address.

This was the first of many visits
to Palestine and Israel where
the Schavers have many inter-
ests.
In 1933 Emma sang. before
80,000 people at Soldiers Field,
Chicago, in the pageant "Ro-
mance of a People." She and
Morris visited Poland in 1937
and she gave concerts in Poland
and throughout Europe. She has
also been on concert tours in
Mexico and Argentina.
At the end of World War II
she was sent by the World Jew-
ish Congress on a cultural mis-
sion to the DP camps. She wrote
articles about the visit and pub-
lished a book, "We Were
There." Emma was the first to
record the Ghetto and Partisan
Songs of the victims of the Nazi
holocaust.
During the Israeli War of
Liberation she gave 30 concerts
before the soldiers and has prac-
tically been a commuter to Is-
rael since its statehood. In 1955
she sang before a Yom Atsmaut
gathering in Mexico City and
in 1958 she composed and sang
"An Ode to Eleanor Roosevelt"
at a rally in the Waldorf-Asto-
ria. In 1960 Emma sang in Town
Hall and in 1961 she took a
trip with her husband to Po-
land, where she sang in War-
saw, Lodz and other cities in
Poland.
Mrs. Schaver has been active
with her husband in many com-
munal and philanthropic organ-
izations.

The dinner will officially cele-
brate the 15th anniversary of
Israel's independence and the
redemption of the first Israel
Bonds. McKeldin was the first
president of the American-
Israel Friendship Society.
