Closing Campaign Dinner May 7;

Israel's Ambassador to the UN
Michael S. Comay will be guest
speaker at the closing dinner of
the 1963 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 7,
at the Jewish. Center.
Ambasador Comay was born
in Cape Town, South Africa, in
1908, received BA and LLB de-
grees from the University of
Cape Town and subsequently
was a Barrister of the Supreme
Court.
During the s -e c o n d World
War, he served with the South
African Armed Forces in the
Middle East theater and. in the
United Kingdom, with the rank
of major.
In 1946, Ambassador Comay
settled in Palestine and served
there as a special representative
of the South African Zionist
Federation; was also attached to
the political department of the

AMBASSADOR COMAY

Jewish Agency, served as a staff
adviser to the Jewish Agency
delegation to the United Na-
tions in 1947-48 and became a
member of the first Israel dele-
gation to the United Nations in
1948:
Upon the establishment of the
State of I s r a e 1, Ambasasdor
Comay was appointed director
of the Commonwealth Division
at the Ministry for Foreign Af-
fairs. In 1951 he was promoted
to the post of assistant director
general. From 1953 to 1957 he
represented Israel in Canada,
first with the rank of minister,
and subsequently as ambassador..
Ambassador Comay is married
and has two grown children.
Charles H. Gershenson, chair-
man of the 1963 Allied Jewish
campaign, announced the names
of the chairmen of the leading
sections who are receiving
awards at today's report meet-
ing.

Artist Chaim Gross
Wins Academy Medal

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Chaim
Gross, the well-known Ameri-
can Jewish sculptor and painter,
has been named the recipient of
the Award of Merit Medal and
a $1,000 prize for sculpture
from the American Academy of
Arts and Letters. He will re-
ceive the awards an May 22.
Born in Austria, Gross came
to the United States in 1921
and studied at the Educational
Alliance, the Beaux Arts In-
stitute of Design and the Art
Students League. He recently
had a one-man show at the
Whitney Museum here.
