Knesset Session Sunday

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM — The special
session of Israel's parliament
demanded by opposition parties
in connection with the contro-
versy over West German scient-
ists working in Egypt on ad-
vanced weapons will be con-
vened on Sunday, the Knesset
presidium decided Tuesday
night. It will be an open meet-
ing.
The presidium acted in re-
sponse to a request signed by
substantially more than the
minimum 30 deputies from
Herut, Liberals, Mapam and
Communist parties. The re-
quests did not contain a non-
confidence motion on the issue,
being based rather on the in-
sistence of the fciur opposition
parties that they did not get
adequate information from Ben-
Gurion at a meeting last Sunday
of the Knesset foreign affairs
and security committee on the
issue.
A leftist Achdut Avodah mem-
ber of the coalition also was re-
ported to be • dissatisfied with
developments on the issue. A
meeting of its central com-
mittee issued a communique
supporting a Knesset resolution
calling on West Germany to
bring about an end to the work
in Egypt of its nationals. The
communique stressed that its
representatives in the govern-
ment and in the Knesset should
see to it that there was no
deviation from the Knesset res-
olution on the issue which was
"adopted unanimously. The Na-
tional Religious Party decided
'at a meeting Tuesday night that
Moshe Shapiro„ Minister of In-
' terior and Health and a re-
ligious bloc leader, should meet
'the Prime Minister and ask for
More information on the Whole
issue, including the forced- res-
: ignation of the security service
head.

The West German govern-
ment stuck to its figure of
"about ten" as the number of
West German scientists of aca-
demic status engaged in rocket
work for the Egyptian govern-
ment. This figure excluded
Prof. Eugen Saenger who was
induced by the government to
quit work for Egypt in 1961. A
government spokesman was un-
able to give any other examples
of official efforts to induce sci-
entists to return from Egypt.
The Israel Foreign Ministry
declined comment on the an-
nouncement by the West Ger-
man Government that it was
looking into the problem of
West German scientists working
on advanced weapons systems
in Ekypt.

U.S. Stand on Scientists
Criticized in Congress
Washington ; (JTA) — The
United States position on the
activities of German nuclear
scientists in Egypt was criti-
cized in a speach on the House
floor by Rep. Seymore Halpern,
New __York Republican, who
charged that "the State Depart-
ment has so far merely sought
to minimize, excuse, and justify
the notorious German role in
Egypt." He said that "the appal-
ling thing to me is the condon-
ing of the work of ex-Nazi
rocket scientists and other Ger-
mans in Egypt by our Govern-
ment through its 'whitewash' of
West Germany in this connec-
tion."

.

He stressed that "if West
Germany is truly devoted to
freedom and is a trustworthy
partner of America, it behooves
our Government to intercede,"
He said "civilization can cer-
tainly expect" responsible Ger-
man conduct "in the light of the
German allegations that • they
regret the barbarism of the
Nazi era."

Us. Jews Protest
Appeals to the Bonn govern-
ment to recall the German
scientists from Egypt were
made by the World Jewish Con-
gress, the Zionist Organization
of America, Farb and Labor
Zionists, the Jewish War Veter-
ans and the Bnai Brith.
JWV asked Secretary of State
Dean Rusk to intercede and the
Bnia Brith sent a delegation to
West German Ambassador
Heinrich Knappstein in Wash-
ington appealing for speedy,
action.
In a statement to the Revi-
sionist Brit Trumpeldor group
in New York, Senator Jacob
Javits announced that he is
requesting the State Depart-
ment to determine whether
Nasser is "violating interna-
tional law" through his pro-
gram of developing weapons
for the destruction of Israel.
An AssoCiated Press report
from Cairo stated this week
that Egypt is developing a dart-
shaped supersonic jet fighter
that w:11 • compare with the _
