Synagogue Leaders to Hold Parley

ing spokesman and scholar of
Conservative Judaism, has an-
nounced that he will speak on
"The Local Synagogue and the
World Jewish Scene" when he
addresses a statewide luncheon
gathering of congregation lead-
ers on Sunday at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield.
Appearing with Dr. Green-
berg on the program of the con-
ference will be Jacob Stein, a
prominent layman in the Con-
servative movement, who in-
1959 was appointed by Dr. Louis
Finkelstein, Chancellor of the
Jewish Theological Seminary,
as chairman of the National
Enrollment Plan.
Under his leadership, almost
one-third of the congregations
affiliated with the United Syna-
gogue of America have adopted
the plan and in keeping with
the central theme of the Jan.
13 gathering, Stein will present
plaques to the presidents of all
Michigan congregations which
have enrolled.

by American Rabbis

The Central Conference of
American Rabbis and the Rab-
binical Assembly, representing
the Reform and Conservative
rabbinate, announced the pres-
entation of a joint award to a
noted Israeli scholar for his
"outstanding contributions to
Jewish history and thought?'
Dr. Yehezkel Kaufmann, pro-
fessor emeritus of Bible at the
Hebrew University in Jerusa-
lem, was cited by the two rabbi-
nical bodies for scholarly works
in Hebrew which include a four-
volume study of Jewish life en-
titled "In Exile and Alien
Lands," and an eight-volume
``History of Religion of Is-
rael," the later published in an
abridged English translation in
1960 under the title "The Re-
ligions of Israel."
Prof. Harry M. Orlinsky, on
behalf of the Central Conference,
and Prof. H. L. Ginsberg, on be-
half of the Rabbinical Assembly,
joined in notifying Dr. Kauf-
mann of the award. The citation
was accompanied by a research
grant.

the special service, at 7 p.m.
tomorrow, which will precede the
dinner and dance being given on
the occasion of the formal dedi-
cation of the new structure on
11 Mile and Northwestern High-
way.
More than 1,400 are expected
at the service and dinner, and
both large social halls are ex-
pected to be filled at tomorrow's
event, according to Louis Luck-
off, chairman of the Shaarey
Zedek public relations committee.
Participants in the dedicatory
service will include Rabbi Irwin
Groner and Cantors Jacob H.
Sonenklar and Reuven Frankel,
and Hyman Safran, chairman of
the dedication committee.

5 Psychologists Will
Teach Special 'Family'
Class at Temple Israel

Temple Israel will open the
second semester of its adult edu
cation classes on Monday eve-
ning when a special course will
be offered on "The Normal Fam-
ily: Its Conflicts and Challen-
ges."
The eight-week series will be
presented by five professors of
educational and clinical psy-
chology at Wayne State Univer-
sity, and will deal with such
specific areas of family life as
martial adjustments, separation
and d i v or c e, communication
with adolescents, discipline
within the family and special
problems of the Jewish child.
The five Wayne State instruc-
tors will be Dr. George D. Bara-
hal, who will be the first
speaker: Dr. John C. Sullivan,
Dr. William W. Wattenberg, Dr.
Fritz Redl and Dr. Mildred
Peters.
In addition to this special
course, being presented at 9
p.m., Dr. Leon Fram will teach
a Bible study course in Numbers
and Deuteronomy; Rabbi M.
Robert Syme will instruct a
class in "Reform Judaism: Its
Founders and Philosophy" and
Cantor Harold Orbach will teach
"The Prayer Book and Its Melo-
dies" at 8 p.m.
On Tuesday at 8 p.m., a
course in conversational Hebrew
will be taught by Mrs. Shlomo
Marenof, continuing also for an
eight-week period.
All classes are open to the
community,

to Meet; Bible Study
Class Re-Scheduled
