Herut Party Split
on Joining Histadrut
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Two
factions in the Herut Party bal-
ance each other almost equally
in countrywide elections held
for the choice of members of
the organization's national coun-
cil.
While each of the factions
claims victory for its side, there
were indications that they just
about canceled each other out
in the balloting.
The issue that divided Herut
was whether to continue to sup-
port its own National Labor
Federation, or whether the party
should form an independent
grouping inside Histadrut, the
General Israeli Federation of
Labor. Mehahem Beigin, leader
of the party, advocated working
inside Histadrut, while Eliezer
Shostak, a 'member of parlia-
ment representing Herut, advo-
cated the other course.
Those favoring the Beigin
policy carried the voting in
this city. However, in many
smaller places, the Shostak pol-
icy was favored by many work-
ers. The final count has not yet
been announced. The National
Council of Herut is scheduled
to meet next month.
