"The Dilatory Ship," an ori-
ginal half-hour film, conceived,
written and produced entirely
in Detroit for the benefit of
the C h i 1 d r e n's Orthogenic
School, will have its public
premiere on WXYZ-TV at 3:30
p.m., Sunday.
The film, the first motion pic-
ture venture of four Detroit
film- makers, was produced at
no cost whatsoever to the
school, the only private, non-
profit school for emotionally
disturbed children in Michigan.
All services and materials used
in the production- of "The Dila-
tory Ship" were contributed.
The value of these contribu-
tions can be appreciated when
it is considered that films of
this nature usually cost $1,000
per minute of finished film.
Mrs. E. M. Broner wrote the
screenplay while in the process
of finishing requirements for
her master's degree at Wayne
State University, her teaching
chores at various schools and
managing her household and
four children.
Filming began in August un-
der the guidance of producer-
directors Rudy Simons and Mor-
ton Zieve and cinematographer
Gordon Lawton. All shooting
had to be done on evenings
and weekends since all of these
young film-makers hold full-
time jobs in the advertising and
film businesses.
Sites for the photography
were Kensington Metropolitan
Park, Detroit Zoo, - various pri-
vate homes, and, • primarily, the
Children's Orthogenic School
itself.
An original musical score
was written for the film by
Zieve and orchestrated by Don
Palmer.
The theme song, with special
lyrics by Rudy Simons, was per-
formed.,by Armand Brown, well-
known for 'recent Vanguard
Theatre appearances.
Some of Detroit's top pro-
fessional actors contributed
their services for the voice
recordings. Rube and Elizabeth
Weiss participated along with
two of their children, David
and Debbie.
Negotiations for a theater
booking after this television
premiere are underway. All
