Rosh Hashanah Quiz

Why is Rosh Hashanah observed in Israel for two days
while all other holidays are observed for one day only in
Israel?
ANSWER: Rosh Hashanah is the only festival that occurs

on the first day of the month. In the days when the first of the
month was determined as a result of the testimony of official
witnesses who observed the appearance of the new moon, com-
munities outside Israel would sometimes not know of the exact
day of the new moon in time to set the official day of the fes-
tival which comes at a set day during the month; thus festivals
outside Israel were set for two days, lest the beginning of the
month be a day later or earlier . In Israel, however, they would
have known in time and consequently the festivals were of one-
day duration. Rosh Hashanah, however, could not be set for one
day, even in Israel, because of the fact that the new moon might
not be seen until late in the day, and the next day would be
set as the first of the month, hence Rosh Hashanah is universally
observed for two days even in our own day.

Why do some people eat from the head of a lamb on
Rosh Hashanah?

Happy Holiday

Two reasons are advanced for this practice. One is that it
is a symbol of the ram which was used as a sacrifice instead
of Isaac on Mount Moriah. Since this episode is the main feature
of our memories on Rosh Hashanah, it was commemorated by
eating from the head of a lamb. Another reason offered is that
this practice is symbolic of our prayer to the Almighty that we
be placed at the "head" of our destiny and not at the foot of it.
For this reason the head of the lamb was eaten. Later it became
customary to at least consume the head of a fish, when it was
rather impractical to get a head of a lamb.

Rosh Hashanah being a time of awe and judgment was one
in which the populace is advised to spend a major portion of
the day in prayer. Naturally, the emotional atmosphere of the
day gave rise to very impressive poetry by those who specialized
in liturgical poetry. The best of these was chosen to form a part
of our Rosh Hashanah liturgy.

Why is it customary to go down to pray at the water's
edge on the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah?

A number of reasons have been offered for this practice,
which is known as "Tashlich." Some claim that this is done to
remind us that Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the Creation
of the Universe. Standing at the edge of a flowing waterway,
reminds us that originally the earth was completely enveloped
in water, and it was only the action of the Creator who cleared
away the water and confined it within certain boundaries that
gave rise to our civilization. Since we were then at the mercy
of the Creator, it is well to remember that we are always at His
mercy, especially on Rosh Hashanah, when matters of life and
death are being decided in the tribunal of heaven. Others claim
that praying at the water's edge reminds us of one of the Divine
tests through which. the Almighty put Abraham Because of the
Satan's challenge as to Abraham's inherent faith in
i the Almighty,
the Almighty had Abraham immersed in water up to his neck
to see if he still retained his faith even though there was a
danger of his drowning. Abraham retained his faith, and passed
the test, thus earning the right to establish the future of his
children as the people of Israel. On judgment day, it is an omen
of courage for us to remember that, even though we are "up to
our necks" in trouble and in danger, we should retain our faith,
as the Almighty always comes through and saves the faithful as
He did Abraham. Some claim that the Tashlich ceremony reminds
us that we are as the fish of the sea, at the mercy of the Divine
fisherman, Who has it in His power to let us swim on or Who
sets His line to catch us and end our lives. We are cautioned
not to be attracted by lure and bait as the fish are; but to con-
tinue on with faith, and pray that the Almighty will spare us
and let us live another year.
