around we are immersed in a
special world of ritual and
liturgy. We hear various words
and we use a number of terms.
Each of them has a specific
meaning and each has also a
lesson which underscores the
significance of the holiday.
A mature person is one who
can derive multiple aid from
hearing certain words and let-
ting their interpretation shape
one's conduct. This, indeed, is
the premise of the holydays
themselves. They come to us to
teach us that we are teachable,
that if only we respond to the
call and make use of the gifts
and talents implanted within us
by God.
Each bit of holydayana has
actually many interpretations.
We will offer but one. There
are other terms. too, besides
those we list. No doubt your
own rabbi's sermons will serve
as elaborations on the insights
offered here. We proceed, then,
to our list:
