Affirm Adherence td
Jewish Programming
To the Editor:
The undersigned, all mem-
bers of the professional staff
of the Detroit Jewish Commu-
nity Center, have read with
dismay Rabbi Halpern's letter
in your issue of May 25. In
view of Rabbi Halpern's asser-
tion that "what is needed is
not articles, misstatements and
anger," we are perplexed at his
original article in "Conserva-
tive Judaism" and at his letter
in last week's Jewish News.
As Jewish communal profes-
sionals we must set the record
straight. The Detroit Jewish
Center has "warmly, Jewishly
motivated personnel, men and
women who have a deep com-
mitment to our tradition." The
facts are:
1. While participation in con-
gregations is not the only meas-
ure of Jewish association, a
large proportion of the profes-
sional staff are members (and
active members) in Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform con-
gregations.
2. All but one supervisor have
taught at religious schools of
Orthodox, Conservative and
Reform congregations.
3. Three of the four division
directors have been youth di-
rectors in Conservative con-
gregations, over extended
periods of time.
4. We professionals have
chosen to work with the Jew-
ish life and Jewish communal
service. Those who were uncom-
fortable with their Jewishness
left the Center field many years
ago to take other positions,
many of which are less de-
manding and more lucrative.
Rabbi Halpern makes much
of Carl Urbont's article in the
Symposium. He should take
notice of the fact that the presi-
dent of the Rabbinical Assem-
bly, Rabbi S a n d r o w, has
apologized to Mr. Urbont for
misusing his article.
It should be obvious that
Rabbi Halpern has misrepre-
sented the facts.

Chalah
The name Chalise is either a
reminder for the housewife to
take off a portion of the bread
and burn it—reminiscent of the
portion of dough which would
be given to the priest in temple
times, or it is a symbol of
making each one aware that he
is to treat his bread as the
Holy bread of the priests and
to honor it with sanctity.
