Young Israel Marks
Its 50th Anniversary

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Sec-
retary of Defense Robert S.
McNamara paid tribute to the
National Council of Young Is-
rael for its community service
programs "w h i c h exemplify
Americans at their best."
The event was part of a series
of celebrations to mark young
Israel's Golden Jubilee event.
Earlier in the day, organization
members—who had flown here
from New York aboard a char-
tered plane — took part in a
special wreath-laying ceremony
at the tomb of the Unknown
Soldier in nearby Arlington
National Cemetery. Retired
Rear Admiral Morris Smellow
of Annapolis, Md., speaking at
the ceremonies, traced the his-
tory of Jewish contributions to
the defense of America since
the founding of the New Am-
sterdam colony in 1657.
A Young Israel delegation,
headed by Rabbi David H. Hill,
president, presented a menorah,
rescued from Germany, to the
White House. Special Presiden-
tial Assistant Myer Feldman
accepted the gift on behalf of
President Kennedy.

TUCSON, (JTA) — A "peri-
patetic Sefer Torah," has found
at least a temporary residence
at the Davis-Monthan Air Force
Base, near this city. The story
was told by Air Force Captain
Burton Jay, chairman of the
Jewish congregation at the
base .
=Recently, Jay informed his
mother, Mrs. Joseph Jay, of
Oceanside, Long Island, that
there is a "Jewish military con-
gregation here with 71 mem-
bers, but we have no Sefer
Torah." Mrs. Jay, formerly
chairman of the Central Nassau
County Armed Services Com-
mittee of the Jewish Welfare
Board, recalled that residents
of her community had brought
a Holy Scroll several years ago
for Jewish military personnel
at Mitchel Air Force Base. near
her home.
When that base was closed by
the Air Force, the Torah was
turned over to the Jewish Wel-
fare Board for safekeeping.
Jay reported that his mother
had made the propert contacts,
and the JWB sent that Holy
Scroll here. JWB made only
one condition. The Scroll is to
be returned to JWB if the con-
gregation at Davis - Monthan
should be dissolved for any rea-
son, so that the Scroll may be
used by other Jewish service-
men elsewhere.
