RIO DE JANEIRO, (JTA)-
For -the second time in a fort-
night, the Brazilian Army pro-
moted a Jewish officer to the
rank of general. The officer is
the former Colonel Aaron Ben-
schimol, an active member of
the Sephardic community, who
was made a brigadier general.
Two weeks ago, Rafael Zipin, a
Jew, of Porte Allegre, was also
promoted to brigadier general.

publisher of The Jewish Observ-
er, Nashville, Tenn., died April
25. In addition to her husband
she is survived by two daughters.
Active in Jewish affairs and in
many civic movements during the
more than 60 years of her mar-
ried life, Mrs. Back was one of
the distinguished Jewish women
leaders in the South.

Granted $194,184

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Awards
totaling $194,184 have been made
to Maimonides Hospital of Brook-
lyn, to finance various research
projects. Among the grants are
$95.033 from the National Irish-
Lute of Health of the United
States Public Health Service.

Mrs. Jacques Back Dies

to General in Brazil

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Dr.
Jacob Jacobson, a prominent
Jewish physician who had done
important research in the treat-
ment of chronic infectious dis-
eases, died here Sunday at the
age of 75.
He was the discoverer of a
therapeutic agent known as
Jacobson's solution which was
first used successfully in the
treatment of loss of vision caused
by trachoma and in the treat-
ment of deafness due to infec-
tions.
Born in Russia, Dr. Jacobson
received his medical degree from
the University of Paris and, in
the early 1930's he was sent by
the French Government to North
Africa where he successfully
treated Arabs for trachoma. For
many years he was active in the
Mizrachi Organization in • France.
He came to the United States
more than 20 years ago and was
a member of the Jewish Acad-
emy of Arts and Sciences in this
country.
