Housing for Aged

Editor, The Jewish News:
Committees have long dis-
cussed the need for low cost
housing for the Jewish Aged. It
has been agreed that the need
is great. What has happened to
the reports submitted to the Jew-
, ish Welfare Board? The FHA
has expressed its willingness to
finance such housing; property is
available. Why the delay?
Our elderly Jewish community
is indeed an unhappy one. Its
members are driven by changing
neighborhoods into housing they
can ill afford. or to homes of
unwilling relatives or finally and
unhappily must give up their
cherished independence and go
into the Home for the Aged. No
matter how fine this institution
may be, it is, nonetheless, an in-
stitution, and those who can still
live independently should not
have to go there. Low cost apart-
ment housing is within reach
now.
If members of the board could
see and know the tragedies of
these elderly people who have
never asked help of the com-
munity, perhaps they would cut
the red tape that binds them and
do something constructive —
now, when the need is urgent.
