Israel has an abundance of
sunshine, the ultimate source of
most of the energy used through-
out the world, and efforts are
being made to harness this
energy.
The problems involved, how-
ever, are Many, and many are
the institutions and individuals
engaged on this research. Among
them are the research staff of
the Technion, Israel Institute of
Technology.
A survey of the hydraulic as-
pects of the utilization of solar
energy is being made by the
Hydraulic Centre on the new
campus at Technion City.

waters in the Negev. It may sound paradoxical, but it is a fact
that devastating floods constitute the gravest danger to farming
in the deserts and semi-deserts of the Negev. Broad wadis, dry
and dreary for months—and even years—suddenly fill with
roaring muddy waters which soon spill over, tear out roots and
rocks, carve new courses for themselves and carry millions of
tons of soil to the sea. By planting trees and other measures,
it is the task of the Jewish National Fund to harness these
waters beneficially.

Present research deals with
the feasibility of construction
of large solar ponds, of up to
a square kilometre in size and
over a metre deep, to convert
solar energy into electric
power. The Technion has been
entrusted by the National Re-
search Council with investiga-
tion of three problems in con-
nection with such ponds: the
effect of wind waves on the
waters enclosed within the
area, how to draw off the heat,
and the interaction of the
various layers of water in the
ponds.
As every swimmer in pond or
ocean knows, the summer sun
heats the water, and the shal-
lower the water the hotter it is.
This is due to the fact that the
sunlight penetrates through the
water to the bottom, which be-
comes hot and warms the water.
Under normal conditions the
hotter water rises to the surface
by convection and the heat is
dispersed at the surface by evap-
oration.
French scientists have in the
past sought to utilize the heat
difference between the lower and
the surface layers of the sea, but
without success.
The system now being in-
vestigated in Israel involves
the use of layers of water of
different densities in the same
pond. Such stratification will
obviate the mixing of the
water by convection currents
with the consequent losses by
evaporation from the top level.
The bottom layer will become
hotter and hotter because of
its contact with the floor of
the pool, heated by the rays
of the sun. Stratification will
result from adding various
quantities of salt to water at
various levels.
Experiments have already been
carried out on a pond 35 metres
square by the National Physical
Laboratory of Israel, which ini-
tiated the research on solar
ponds, and temperatures of about
90 degrees centigrade have been
obtained at the bottom of the
pond after four months exposure
to the sun.

raising drive with two dinners
at which more than $2,000,000
were pledged, raising to $2,-
677,000 total contributions to

Students of Hebrew will be
pleased to know that "The Stu-
dent's Dictionary," English-
Hebrew and Hebrew - English,
(Milon Latamid," edited by
Benjamin Benari, published by
Shulsinger Brothers (21 E. 4th
St., N. Y. 3). has been prepared
to assist them in perfecting a
knowledge of the language. By
including in it a survey of He-
brew grammar, the editor has
rendered a great service to the
elementary student, but the dic-
tionary will prove as valuable
also to the advanced student.
Students will find that the
editor of this dictionary has
succeeded in his effort "to in-
clude an extensive vocabulary
connected with life at home,
with sports, with Jewish folk-
ways and with modern Israel."
Benari explains that "the
selection of Hebrew words con.-
tained in this dictionary is es-
sentially contemporary because
it is based on the Hebrew vocab-
ulary in daily use by the Is-
raelis, and in the most recent
publications of Israel."
The "Survey of Hebrew
Grammar," which is inkrted
between the Hebrew-English
and English-Hebrew sections,
contains sentences that ex-
plain proper usage of Hebrew
terms.
Thus, this valuable dictionary
not only is a book of words and
their translations, but also a
textbook of a sort that will help
students in their perfection of
a knowledge of Hebrew.
Guides to the pronunciation
of Hebrew words and explana-
tions of Hebrew vowels are
helpful to the students.
Faetures in this volume in-
clude: Biblical and modern He-
brew names, Hebrew renditions
of cardinal and ordinal numbers
and other terms.
The new Hebrew dictionary
is a great helpmate to students
of the language.
The `Map Jew'
Yehuda Cresques, known as
the "Map Jew," was a leading
cartographer and maker of nau-
tical instruments on the island
of Majorca, where, in the 14th
century, map-making was almost
entirely in Jewish hands.
Among his works was a map of
the world made for King Juan I
of Aragon, who presented it to
King Charles VI of France in
1381.

Some people spend Passover in Atlantic City, in Miami
Beach, or 'Tel Aviv. My husband and I once spent Passover
in Chabufka, a very small village in Poland: That's where
Yonkers mother lived, and since I had never met her, we
decided it would be a blessing if we paid her a visit. So the
first Passover after we were married, forty-two years ago,
we headed for Poland.
Yonkel used to send his mother $100 a month. In those days,
$100 went a long way, especially in Chabufka. So we were
rather surprised when we arrived and folind Mother's cup-

nothing more than a few of the barest essentials. "What'S the
matter, Mama, don't I send you enough money?" Yonkel
asked. "Certainly," she answered. "You send me too much."
"So why is there so little food in the house?" There was a
pause for a few seconds, then she answered. "How much does
an old woman eat ? So every month, when your check comes, I
put it right in the bank. After all, should a mother die with-
out leaving her son an inheritance?"
Well. Passover is no time for a cupboard to he bare, so
Yonkel and I went out and did a little shopping for Mother.

selection in Chabufka. Not like here, with supermarkets
