Virginia Senate Revokes
Rockwell's Charter, Bars
Group's Use of Nazi Term

RICHMOND, Va., (JTA)—The
Virginia State Senate overwhelm-
ingly approved a bill to revoke
the State Charter of George
Rockwell's American Nazi Party.
The measure went through the
upper chamber with no debate.
The bill was identical with the
one passed last week by the
House of Delegates which bars
the use of the words "Nazi" or
"National Socialist" in the char-
ter name of any group.
Its effect would not necessar-
ily put an end to Rockwell's ac-
tivities, however, since it leaves
open the possibility that Rock-
well can apply for a new et -lifter
under a different name.'
The measure now goes back
to the House of Delegates for
engrossing prior to being passed
on to Gov. Albertis Harrison for
signature. Once in effect, the
measure would empower state
authorities to take iegal steps
leading for formal revocation of
the present charter. A House-
passed resolution condemning the
Rockwell group as "an enemy of
the people of Virginia and the
United States" has not yet been
acted upon by the Senate.
San Diego College Plans
Hearing on Rockwell Incident
SAN DIEGO, Cal., (JTA) —
San Diego State College officials
indicated they planned a hearing
on the incident in which a
Brooklyn Jewish student attend-
ing a forum addressed by George
Rockwell punched the Nazi on
the jaw.
The blow. delivered by Edward
Cherry. a 22-year-old physical
education major, touched off a
melee Thursday in which one of
Rockwell's two "stormtroopers"
knocked the Brooklyn youth
down with a flying tackle and
was in turn tackled by a group
of students who rushed up to
the stage.
The student audience also
greeted Rockwell's anti-Semitic
remarks with a barrage of eggs.
The jeering students attacked
Rockwell's car. breaking a win-
dow and denting it before police
were able to clear a path so that
the Nazi and his followers were
able to get into it and drive
away.
College officials indicated they
were convinced that the student
was - sincere and not a trouble-
maker. - One official said he

S. African Jews Seek
Legislation Against
Anti-Semitic Material

JOHANNESBURG, (JTA)
The South African Board of Jew-
ish - Deputies disclosed it had
urged the Parliament to consider
the importance of preventing
publication of anti-Semitic mate-
rial.
Gustav Saron, general secre-
tary. told the monthly meeting
of the Deputies that the proposal
was contained in a memorandum
which the organization had been
invited to submit in connection
with an "undesirable publica-
tion" bill now before the Parlia-
ment.
He said the board position had
been that freedom of expression
in general should be interfered
with as little as possible but that
it also was aware of what harm
could be done by publicly distri-
buted material inciting
against Jews, and that the same
argument applied to incitement
of racial feeling against other
sections of the population.
The board said in- the memo-
randum that it was possible for
situations to develop where such
evils could be prevented only
by appropriate legislation. The
board appended to its memoran-
dum examples of anti-Semitic
material which it said it believed
properly E:lould be considered un-
desirable literature, circulation
to be punishable by law.

JDC receives its funds chiefly
from the United Jewish Appeal.
Under the new system, pa-
tients are now discharged after
an average period of only seven
weeks. Out of the 45 psychiatric
patients at Tel Hashomer, about
25 leave the hospital and return
to their communities each
month, making room for an
equal number of new patients.
Now when a person goes to
the psychiatric ward of the gen-
eral hospital. no one but his
family need know that he suf-
fers from a mental ailment.
