"He made you king to do justice
and righteousness."—I Kings 10:9.
A clarion call has been issued for workers and givers, for solicitors and
contributors, in the current Allied Jewish Campaign. And now each of the two
thousand or more campaign workers will be a king in his domain—a member
of the only royalty of merit, the kingship that strives for justice and righteous-
- ness.
i.
R
This, indeed, is the great objective of our community for the coming few
weeks, during which we are charged with the duty of raising a large sum for
relief and rehabilitation, for cultural uplifting in our community, for a guarantee
I of restoration of health for the sick and aid to the needy.
A campaign leadership of great merit has been selected to direct the
En present drive for a goal of $5,904,000. Dedicated men and women are devoting
ci themselves to the sacred task of providing avenues of escape into the security
z
offered by Israel for tens of thousands of humiliated fellow-Jews on two
continents. They can not do this job alone. They need the help of volunteer

workers, of a strong and a cooperative campaign organization. They offer an
opportunity to men and women whose help is needed in the present great

of good deeds—of tzedakah and generosity.
And while extending -a hand of welcome to the volunteer workers, the
p campaign makes its plea to the community at large to rise to new heights, to

recognize the responsibilities that confront us, to 136 more generous now than
‘,4 ever before for the sake of our kinsmen abroad and our children and ourselves
1=1 at home.
l
For, while our campaign helps provide homes for the displaced and
= disinherited overseas, it also offers spiritual comfort and security to all of us
at home. The Allied Jewish Campaign is not only the provider for Israel and
the relief organizations overseas through the United Jewish Appeal and the
Joint Distribution Committee. It also is the enhancing element on the local
front by the support it ,gives to our Hebrew Schools, without which our
spiritual heritage would be impoverished; by its assistance to the causes that
aid our Home for Aged, our Sinai Hospital, family and children's services, and
the score or more national institutions which labor in the fields of education,
health and civic protection.
Under the leadership of Paul Zuckerman and a corps of men and women
who, by training, as workers in the ranks of previous Allied Jewish Campaigns,
as pacemakers who also have set high standards for giving by their own

generosity, the 1962 Allied Jewish Campaign is now in full operation. The

campaign organization now hopes for two good responses--from large volunteer
forces and from a generous community. Our society as a whole has the double
obligation to meet both calls with honor and with dignity. Detroit Jewry has
responded well before; let us duplicate our best efforts by
making the present
campaign the most glorious in our community's history.

Remember Amalek
'Thou Shalt Not Forget'
The current Allied Jewish Campaign opens on an appropriate date—on
Purim—an occasion that admonishes us not to forget the indignities that were
heaped upon us by those who sought to destroy us and to keep in mind the
lessons taught by the needs for survival.
It is so very appropriate that this should be the Sabbath of Remembrance
—Sabbath Zakhor—referring to the selection from the Torah of Parasha
Zakhor—Deut. 25:17-19:
"Remember what Anzalek did unto thee by the way as ye came forth out of
Egypt; ,how he met thee by the way. and smote the hindmost of thee, all
that were
enfeebled in thy rear, when thou west faint and weary; and he feared not God.
Therefore it shall be, when the Lord thy God hath given thee rest from all thine
enemies round about, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an
inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt not blot out the remembrance of Amalek
from under heaven; thou shalt not forget."
We are admonished to remember—and our current Allied Jewish Campaign
also is a time bidding us not to forget the past, to keep in view the threats
heaped upon us and to strive for such security for the survivors from horrors
and persecutions that the horrors of the eras that have passed shall never again
be repeated.
Purim is a time to remember. It is an occasion for rejoicing over our
people's triumph against an enemy in Persia. It also is a time to keep in view
a major lesson that goes with victory over persecution—that kinsmen must not
abandon kinsmen and that if any single sector in Jewry is to feel secure,
it must also help assure the security of all others in Israel; because all of us
are linked together in a cause of justice and righteousness, and indignities
that strike one group affect all of us.
As we prepare for Purim, to rejoice in the triumph of justice, let us also
mobilize for a successful Allied Jewish Campaign, so that we may strike again
for righteousness for our people globally.
