part. Even beyond the bounds
of the settlement one heard
the praise of his energy and
resourcefulness that made the
settlement stand out as a model
of success.
He came to the country as a •
youth shortly after the estab
lishment of the state, but not
too late to join in the battle
for independence. Like so many
others, he came from a camp
in Europe having gone through
the horrors of the Nazi camps •
Somehow—he said—I always
knew that I would reach Eretz
Israel . . . Even in the dark-
est hours, when death was lurk-
ing, I knew it could not be the
end . . .
The candle . . . He looked at
it with eyes that reflected
warmth and sadness, pride and
bitterness . . .
I can still remember the
day . . . the hour . . . That
day the order came out for
all Jews in the Ghetto to as-
semble at an appointed place
in town. It was on the first-
day of Hanukah . . . My
mother began hastily packing
some belongings into a bun-
dle (my father had by then
"disappeared") . . . My little
sister was crying . . . so was
my mother . . . It was eleven
in the morning when we were
all ready to go. Suddenly my
grandfather fell to the floor.
He was old and frail and his
heart failed him . . . There
was little we could do . . . As
my mother ran out of the
house frantically to look for
a- doctor, I sat nearany grand-
father. He brought out a
smile on his pale lips and,
holding my hand, told me to
take care of mother and sis-
ter and not to worry about
him . . . I am old, he said,
maybe it's better this way
. .. You are young and never
despair ... A Jew must never
despair . . Then his eyes
fell upon the old Hanukah
lamp that stood in the corner
with one little candle in it
. . . "Take the candle with
you," he whispered, "Remem-
ber . . . today is Hanukah
. . . take- it . . . today is
Hanukah . . . remember the
light of Maccabi . .. take it
. . . remember . . ."

When mother returned he was
dead.
Our long journey began that
day. Soon I found myself in a
camp, alone. Mother was taken
away and I never saw her
again . . . For five years the
nightmare lasted and no need
to tell you any details .. . For
five years I fought death and
despair. I never parted with
the candle. It became a symbol.
It grew into. a challenge. The
words of my dying grandfather
echoed within me: "Remember
the light of the Maccabi" . . .
It gave me strength . . . it filled
me with determination to sur-
vive . . . to "prove" that it can
overcome even the Nazi beast
as the prayer says, "And Thou
gave the many into the hands
of the few" .. .
And here it is, the candle,
which brought me to these
shores. E very Hanukah I take
it out and place it alongside
the lit Hanukah for all to see
. . . In memory of my grand-
father who with his dying eyes
saw it shining again at the end
of the bleak road ahead . . .
