Eliezer Poupko Dies

PHILADELPHIA,. (JT A) —
Rabbi Eliezer Poupko, 75, a lead-
ing Orthodox rabbi and formerly
an honorary president of the
Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the
United States and Canada, died
here Monday of a heart attack.
He was spiritual leader of the
Aitz Chaim Congregation here at
the time of his death..
Born in Russia, Rabbi Poupko
was ordained in Volozin in 1908
and served as spiritual leader of
various communities in Russia
until he was- sentenced to a Si-
berian prison for defying the re-
ligious policy of the Soviet Union.
He came to the United States
in 1931, when U.S. rabbis secur-
ed his release. He assumed his
post as spiritual leader of Aitz
Chaim Congregation in 1943. -
