Eliezer Ben Yehuda

Eliezer Ben Yehuda who was born
in a Lithuanian hamlet about a
hundred years ago to his father
Yehuda Perlman was a diligent child
with a remarkable memory. When he
was Bar Mitzvah, his mother sent
him to study at Yeshiva. Eliezer dis-
tinguished himself in his studies and
became deeply versed in the Torah
and Talmud. The head of the Yeshiva
who loved to read various books in
Hebrew aroused in Eliezer an intense
love of the Hebrew language. A year
later Eliezer left the Yeshiva in order
to attend • high • school. From there he
traveled to Paris to study at 'Uni-
versity. He intended to become a
doctor. Eliezer signed his first article
with the name Ben Yehuda and by
this name he became known in
Israel.

Before emigrating one
Palestine, Ben
Yehuda made a vow ver to speak
in any other language except Hebrew.
In those days no one in the whole
country spoke Hebrew regularly
Ben Yehuda was isolated and
Many Jews did not believe
it
was possible to find in Heb
, which
people had not spoken
31
of years, all the wo
modern man. Then
Yehuda de-
cided to collect fr
the literature
of every age the
rds and phrases,
explain them
compile a dic-
tionary. Thus
the idea of the
great diction
born, known after-
wards as Be
ehuda's dictionary.
